No no no no no no no no and no. I think me posting about how wrong this is will be one of the first times in Q3W history where people will actually not scream STFU.

I don't think they could of ballsed it up as much as they have... Wayy to much cgi, no funny jokes, no actual laughter, and a boring, dull and to be honest shite plotline... Its just not Cricket.

Although its obvious that something is going on with the plot, I mean, have you caught all the blade Runner references...? They are in every fucking shot after all...

And tonight is the supposed "best of the three" episodes... Which is shot mostly on location of Coronation Street... Oh joy...

*Watches DVD's again and sobs*

I watched the first two and thought they were average. Nothing to get worked up over, there have been unfunnier episodes.

Revisiting and attempting to recreate old humour is always going to be a mistake and always going to fall on its arse. The bit on the bus where Dave talks to those two kids was cringeworthy :(

I'll paste what I posted on another forum about it:

Quite possibly the worst fucking piece of shit i've ever
seen in my life. I grew up watching that show so it is even
more painful to see them use such a cliche idea when they
had the potential to reboot the series and make it relevent
to us again. The whole "tv characters in the real world"
thing has been done so many times before and it NEVER works.
The only time I even raised a grin was when they did the
photograph scanning/references to Bladerunner.

Really, to me it seemed like the Red Dwarf team and Dave
(the channel) were just circle jerking each other for 30
minutes. Yes, it's Red Dwarf and yes, it's on Dave, but
where the fuck is the story?

Oh man, I don't even think I can watch the final episode.
THAT BAD. I can see why they removed the audience laughter
track from the final audio mix. This shit just isn't funny
and has totally detroyed any hope of a new season/movie now.

You know, when you watch them all together in one group they DO work... Its a shame they split them up...

But somebody added a laughter track to some footage. See how much better it makes it:

Disappointing, I don't think there's any getting around it. Not enough funny in those 3 episodes, but yeah, they probably do work better when they're watched continuously so I'll most likely do just that at some point.

Anybody else think it jumped the shark right at the start of season 7 though? It was just instantly not as funny, the change in filming style/production took something away from it too. By contrast, season 6 didn't have a bad episode:
1. Psirens
2. Legion
3. Gunmen of the Apocalypse: brilliant
4. Emohawk - Polymorph II: the cheesiness of the way they used the cheap puppet and how they filmed the tin of baked beans attacking the cat just added to it
5. Rimmerworld
6. Out of Time: Excellent cliffhanger for a sci-fi sitcom

Season 8, while totally different, had a LOT of quality gags...

Season 7 was pretty much the bad series for me, mostly because it wasn't done live. The actors really do build up quite an act in front of a live audience, which was lost of 7 and indeed BTE.

That might well be my issue with season 8, I'll have to revisit then I can form an opinion of it.

Forgot to mention, IMO the main factor in most of it beyond 6 not being anywhere as funny seems to be the absence of Rob Grant as a writer.

True, Rob did bring a lot of quality gags to the show, and it was a shame he left. But he was only ever half the duo.

The good half ;)

Seriously though, it was probably their dynamic in the writing process that gave it whatever it was missing. It's quite possible that Naylor going instead would have had a similar effect. It's done now though :)

Aye it was pants. Wasn't it just an easter special 3-parter rather than a series though? :s

If they marketed it as a series then that's just another negative...

No Norman Lovett either. They couldnt have Holly because of "not enough money". Oh yeah that fucking Smart Car eh? Spending all that £££ on a CGI Scutter where the old shitty style puppet has comedy value eh?

Lets hope to fuck last weekends specials were made to shake off the 10 year rust. Knuckle down with a new script, Get Rob Grant back in for the ping-pong rally Gags. Get Holly back, lose Red Dwarf again. Get the live audience back in. Lets have an old school series just one more time. The fans at least deserve it.

I honestly thought the car was Starbug. If the script was better writen they could have landed Starbug on Earth, then out of some dwarf style crazyness it would have transformed into that pathetic micro machine. that scene alone would have made a big laugh, even better with an audience waching.

Thank god the nerds on he official site are complaining. Lets hope Doug takes a good hard smegging look.

You know I always had a secret semi for the female Holly (Or Hilly, to classic fans). Norman was a laugh, but fuck, that man AGED. I mean, in space of 10 years he aged about 50 years... Crazy...

But the whole "season 9 or 10" deal looks like it hangs on the sales of the BTE DVD, which pre-order wise looks VERY good... So it looks like there will be a new season...

I really hope they ditch 90% of the CGI. As was said before, Red Dwarf worked because it was shit... It was low budget, shite lighting and cramped sets on a paper boys wage of a budget. But that WAS Red Dwarf. Adding CGI to EVERY scene was so wrong to do... Don't even get me started on the Skutters... What was wrong with a remote control Bob and Madge...?

I'm glad BTE happened. It was new Dwarf. But it also served as a warning to the team, kind of like 100% spoot on list of what they should and shouldn't do in a new series... Thats a good thing. At least it was wasted on a three part special and not an entire series of 1 off episodes.
