got sick of vista, installed ubuntu tonight
Vista wouldn't sleep or hibernate or eject a CD/DVD. Piece of shit.
Dual booting Ububtu for now. Recommend me some software, it has been a few years since I've used linux as my primary desktop.
My wife needs a replacement for Picasa. http://www.picnik.com/ might work.
I'll need a replacement for iTunes.
DVD backup would be nice.
I'd like to ditch Vista completely if possible. I play Guild Wars occasionally, it looks like it should work w/ Wine.

The GNOME picture program is F-Spot. "Meh" is a good description. It works well enough to work, but that's about it. It's nowhere near as slick as Picasa. There's also this, but I've never tried it.
The music situation is one that's annoying. The best overall replacement for iTunes is Banshee (IMHO), but Rhythmbox and Amarok 1.4 are also solid. Some people like Songbird as well, but I just don't get that. I use Quod Libet, because of how well it handles 10k+ file collections, and has an awesome tag editor.
DVD backup, K9Copy is the typical answer, but honestly DVDShrink works flawlessly in Wine, and it runs faster than K9Copy in my experience.
Edit: Hrm, I might give Guild Wars a shot. I think I may have bought that online years ago.

Yeah, I had a Guildwars account laying around from back when I quit WoW. Installing now in the current dev version of Wine ( WineHQ apt repository -- you want to use that Wine, not the one Ubuntu provides ).Therac-25 wrote:Edit: Hrm, I might give Guild Wars a shot. rock on boys, thanks

Jeez, I'm out of the loop. Last time I looked, they only had the 2.7 version there.^misantropia^ wrote:http://picasa.google.com/linux/- Picasa for Linux
Edit: From the LICENSE.FOSS file:
I thought it looked like a Windows application. It's basically the Windows exectuables packaged up with a specific version of Wine. Not that this is a problem -- Wine stuff works flawlessly these days. The Software contained in this product includes some components of Free and
Open Source Software, including software from the Wine Project, the Mozilla
browser, xdg-utils, xdg-user-dirs, and the Bitstream Vera truetype fonts.

Therac, you know of any Ventrilo alternatives for Linux?
Re: got sick of vista, installed ubuntu tonight
Ventrilo should work well with WINE.

Depends on what you mean. Vent runs fine in Wine, but I had issues with keybinding with it the last time I tried it (which was ~1 year ago).Deathshroud wrote:Therac, you know of any Ventrilo alternatives for Linux?
There's an official TeamSpeak 2 Client for Linux.

Alright, I'll have to play with Wine then.
Re: got sick of vista, installed ubuntu tonight
I can't believe nobody mentioned Amarok for a media manager. It's the only app that I still miss from my years on a linux box. I use songbird now as an alternative, but don't like it quite as much.
If at first you don't succeed, then skydiving's not for you.

Hey schwim, how have you been? Haven't seen you around here lately.

heya obsidian, doing fine, thanks for noticing my absence
Woops about the Amarok props. A lot of guys got their panties in a bind over the release of 2.0, it's bugs and missing features, but those guys were already freaking out about KDE 4.x, the dolphin file manager and big icons

Re: got sick of vista, installed ubuntu tonight
(optional) big hard disks w/RAID + VMware (Free) 2.x server on Ubuntu + vmware (free, as well) converter = virtualization of all windows systems in your house (use rdp or terminal server client applet in Ubuntu), which frees up hardware for more efficient OSes, like OpenBSD or CentOS. Oh, and furthermore, = win.
Haven't tried ubuntu/Xen but i've heard it's very similar and that some people prefer it, for the flexible kernel integration. That's the one drawback to vmware. Kernel updates mean reconfiguration of vmware--which isn't a show-stopper, but it is an inconvenience.

i just installed msttcorefonts on a new ubuntu install
after installation is complete the following code applies it without restarting. you need to close your browser after this to take effect.
Code: Select all
$sudo apt-get install msttcorefonts
Code: Select all
$sudo fc-cache -fv

awesome, thanks

I never got it to work right with WINE. Might keep an eye out for http://mumble.sourceforge.net/Deathshroud wrote:Therac, you know of any Ventrilo alternatives for Linux?

...And even after Vista SP2, my laptop still won't go in to suspend correctly.
I need to get off my lazy ass and finish configuring Ubuntu so it can be my only OS.

DeCSS, MP3 management, dunno if the options listed above mean I can't still use iTunes during dual boot or at work w/ my iPod.+JuggerNaut+ wrote:what else are you configuring?

Re: got sick of vista, installed ubuntu tonight
no real replacement for iTunes i'm afraid, but instead of dual booting maybe use virtualbox with an XP image?
Re: got sick of vista, installed ubuntu tonight
What do you need iTunes for? Just copying crap to the iPod?
I know that Banshee is coming along really nicely -- I've been meaning to test it with my new iPod, I just need to get a Windows iTunes to format it, as it seems to be mounting the mac formatted iPod as readonly for some inexplicable reason.
