The liver also can't do it's thing if there's alcohol in your system, since it's busy dealing with that.

Thanks foo. I don't drink anyway.

I just looked at my feet. The front of them and my toes are a bit
puffy and red. I must be overdoing it a bit.

Water Intake

While it should be a no-brainer, water intake is another place where trainees make basic mistakes (I am guilty of this myself). The effects of dehydration range from minimal (at 2% dehydration, strength and performance decrease) to painful (can anybody say kidney stones) to worse (at 10% dehydration, death can occur).

While there are many generalized water intake equations (such as 8 glasses per day), these may not be correct for everyone. To poach another guideline from my mentor, a good rule of thumb is 5 clear urinations per day, and 2 of those should come after your workout. Yes, that means looking in the toilet when you pee.

This gives trainees a way of individualizing water intake. Obviously someone who lives in a hot, humid environment (or trains in a non-air conditioned gym) will need more water than someone who lives in moderate temperatures and trains in a posh gym.

I’d note that, despite more dogmatic rhetoric to the contrary, all fluids contribute to hydration state (as do many high-water foods such as fruits and vegetables). Yes, even caffeinated ones; research clearly shows that the small amount of fluid lost from the caffeine is still much less than the amount gained by drinking the drink.

It’s worth nothing that recent research has found that plain water is actually the worst drink for rehydration following exercise. Milk was actually shown to be superior to either plain water or Powerade/Gatorade type drinks, most likely due to the potassium and sodium content. You can read more about this in the artilce Milk as an Effective Post-Exercise Rehydration Drink.

Finally, thirst is a poor indicator of hydration state. By the time you’re thirsty, you’re already a bit dehydrated.

I think you can influence the way in which calories are expended by adjusting your activity - calories in vs out is hugely important, but it's not the entire equation afai understand

So you don't think that intelligent use of steady state cardio and interval training, combined with weight lifting, can help bias calories in towards building muscle, and help bias calories out towards shedding fat?

i think steady state cardio will burn calories and better yet hiit will burn calories and raise ur metabolism for hours after but why not just eat less? i mean if ur only goal is to get ripped abs...i have seen plenty of ripped ppl who don't do any cardio...

but i do cardio cuz i don't want to die...

I think it does more than simply raise metabolism and burn calories. Some studies suggest that interval training, for example, can preferentially shed fat while preserving muscle, tho lyle mcdonald is critical of these studies.

But from what I understand, there are different metabolic pathways that you can differentially develop. If you help develop fat burning pathways, then you'll be better off by doing that combined with good diet, than just dieting alone.

Btw, for what difference this might make or not, I don't have loose fat all over the stomach, nothing wobbles. What I have is a pot belly which feels like it needs a pin to burst it, and apparently that is Visceral fat build up between the organs of the torso. Presumably that is pushing on the organs and causes the bloated look. So although I have some excess subcutaneous fat which definitely needs to go, the main problem here is the internal fat surrounding the vital organs. Thought I'd mention that in case it throws any different light on what I need to do or just carry on with my diet and exercise as normal. Here is a picture of jeremy clarkson who has a similar stomach to give you a better idea.

Yeah but my doctor said it wasn't a bloat due to lactose or gluten intolerance. I was hoping he WOULD say that, then it would be a simple case of cutting out a particular food. What's kim chee's? Cheese?
