Hard Drive MIA

I installed Windows7, and it wouldn't recognize my external. I made it an internal... which I've done before... and now it recognizes it in the profiles, but it still won't show up in the explorer. The comp knows it's there, but there's no way to access it. Any ideas?

Yeah? Gosh, you are so smart. Look here, pumkinhead. If it showed up in "computer" there wouldn't be a problem. I know what caused the problem... I fucked up when I disconnected it. The only solution I've found is data recovery software... which hasn't done shit so far. Since this isn't the fucking void, I expected at least one legitimate response. Seems all intelligence has left Q3W.

Okay. i had that coming. Anywho... The recovery software - R Studio - is continuously giving the 1117 erroror. (I/O device error). From what I can understand... that's a problem with the registry? I'm definately in WAYYYY over my head on this. The only files I really want back are the family pics. i kept everything I had, in that area, on that drive.

it sounds like the hardware's probably okay.

plug the drive into another machine, or start the machine up with a boot disk.

It's an external. I did try it on several different machines, as well as secondary on two. I dunno. I put it on the shelf til technology catches up with my superior n00b skillz.

If Windows screwed up and messed up the MBR, the data may still be intact. Try loading up an Ubuntu live CD and seeing if you can get it to mount.

So... I dl'd the Ubuntu disc. Tried booting to it, but my comp wouldn't do it. It just booted straight to Windows. Yes, the boot sequence is set to boot a cd if in the drive. I then tried installing through explorer. I kept getting an error and the install would quit. Yes, I dl'd the correct one. I dug up my old comp, reinstalled the external drivers, plugged it in, and it accessed. I have no idea why it wouldn't access on any of the other comps... in any of the other combos I tried.

Errr... to be clear, your hard drive now works on your old computer and you are able to access your files? Problem solved?

I'm a little confused because "it" could mean the Ubuntu CD, your hard drive or your washing machine.

The hard drive works on my old computer. I couldn't get the Ubuntu cd to install. I don't know why the drive suddenly works on my old comp. I tried to get into this drive on machines that had Windows7, XP home, & XP pro. I tried it as an external and as an internal secondary. Each comp I tried it on, I used the install disc that came with the drive. Nothing worked.

I got my old computer, a Compaq, AMD, etc.... it was only used for docs and email... and I installed the drivers and software for the external. (which is safely back in it's housing) I plugged the drive in per instructions. Next, I put the Ubuntu disc in the cd drive and restarted the comp. The boot skipped the Ubuntu and went straight to windows. Only, this time, as soon as the comp was fully booted, the external hd password screen came up. I put in the pass and BOOM! There was all of my stuff.

Oh yeah, It was working fine on my gamer until I put Windows 7 on it. When I disconnected the external before installing W7, I didn't do it correctly... least, that's what my intensive internet search of the error told me. This whole episode just seems weird.

Oh yeah: My Washing machine works great.
