Got an e-mail back from id today,

IGN are transferring the domain to id as it technically belongs to id. id will then contact us, and current proposition is that they'll point the domain to a server of our choosing if they're happy that we're managing the site to their expectations (bearing in mind the site will then be under their name, literally).

That's great news. Sounds like the best of both worlds -- we get to keep the domain name for the forums, but if id disapproves of anything they can point it to a different server of their choosing at any time, so they still have full control of their "brand image" or whatever you like to call it.
