A federal jury ruled Thursday that Jammie Thomas-Rasset willfully violated the copyrights on 24 songs, and awarded recording companies $1.92 million, or $80,000 per song.

I don't understand the American legal system. How do they justify the $80,000 per song? If it's 24 songs she downloaded, then shouldn't she get the same kind of fine that you'd get for shoplifting 2 or 3 CD's? I doubt a petty thief would have to pay 1.9 million dollar over stealing 3 CD's.

but its recursive!
by downloading, she MUST have also shared them with others, who in turn shared them with others, etc!
come to think of it, the fine should be $ ∞

This doesn't make sense at all.
Because whites has ignored copyright of blacks while attaching price tags, that is piracy, anyone can ignore as well.

Everyone's piracy is the universal friendship.
Only someone's piracy is the universal music.

I sometimes wonder how a13n's brain is wired.
Back on topic, this broad got slapped with this gargantuan fine because she:
a) appealed when she was already convicted (and obviously guilty)
b) was caught lying during the trial
c) held the jury in contempt
In short, she brought it on herself.

Yes, because that's how justice works. Always address the judge with "your honor" or we'll present you a gazillion dollar fine for not being nice.

I think that fine is way out of line, seems silly to award that much when the companies involved have already stated they will settle for less.

I'll take that a step further: if the jury doesn't like how you look, or how you smell, or how you wear a green shirt over purple trousers, your fine will be higher. Great legal system there!

You appear to have missed points A and B, Eraser.
BTW, I'm due for a job interview at that (ex?)company of yours, this Wednesday. Care for a beer afterwards?

Are you implying that wearing green over purple shouldn't be a punishable offense?

Lying in court gets you a 1.9 million dollar fine?

Not just lying but stupidity in general and wasting the court's time.

I'm from Rotterdam so that's no problem. Where is your office located, Eraser?

Exactly how does one pay back $1.9m? More lols from the copyright bullies in America.

They'll just take everything she's got and the rest will go into jail time.

The fine isn't relevant to weight...
