I'm pretty sure that's the forum doing its daily backup.
what is there to back up? surely it can just instance one laughing blue icon and fill in the rest with random text. no one would notice

Well, perhaps not just the forum, but whatever backup maintenance junk IGN does to their servers on a daily basis. All I can tell you is that it happens once a day like clockwork and IGN does whatever the hell they do in that half hour. They've been doing that for quite some time, so it has nothing to do with the recent slowdowns/server termination thing that's going on now.

Actually I barely did anything yet. I just have phpbb installed and the site mirrored with no database. I need to get IGN to export the database for me because it's huge and I don't have shell access. We can't move yet because the domain name issue is still pending. id software is helping us with that one, thanks to Turb.

Everything needs to happen at the same time. Once I get them to export this shit, It would need to be imported into the new site asap because obviously any new topics since then would be lost. We would also need to transfer the domain at the same time so the thing actually resolves to the new site. I really don't expect everything to go so smoothly. There will probably be some downtime regardless because I need to clean up the database, test some cron scripts for backups, and other small things.

That's the plan, anyway.

Thanks for elucimedating doomer.
Granted, I don't post here a lot anymore, but still, I'd hate to see this community just vanish one day.

They better not screw us over at the last minute. My confidence with IGN is a little shaky.

I just checked...it looks like
Answering email is incompatible with the new data centre. At this time we regretfully are not in a position to carry out the additional work needed to make answering email compatible.
Well. That explains it then.

DooMer, just to make it easier on yourself you should go ahead and plan a downtime window of 2 or 3 days. Just friendly advice, from experience.

Before IGN exports the database, make a post in every forum saying that the board is going to be down for x days, and it will be back up.

Heck, just the DNS record could take 2 days to propagate to some people (not really, but that's the theoretical possibility). Give yourself plenty of time so you don't have a bunch of people whining and bitching that there are problems.

You could do it a lot faster than that, but why bother, especially if you're planning on doing some housecleaning too. People can live with it being down a few days.

Again, just friendly advice. I'm not the one responsible for the move. :) (although I'd be willing to help of course, if there's anything I can do.)

what Fender said
its not clear yet if we'll keep the domain name, since its owned by IGN. Right now ToddH known by us all is trying to get IGN to transfer it to us (DooMer), but nothing is certain at the moment.

so, while a good idea, R00k, it just can't be planned until this crucial detail is clear.

Yes, it's crucial we keep the name, since it's all we ever talk about.

If we couldn't retain the domain name, I'd post messages in the forums stating what the new domain name is (and when it would be up), and once the database is dumped, make it read-only so the site stays up for a few weeks to catch any stragglers, but nobody can post.

I'd still keep it down for a few days after that to give myself time for housekeeping and all of those unforeseen things that always come up when you do something like this. It's not eBay, and it's not DooMer's full time job, so why not save the headache? :)

edit: And if Todd H. is trying to help us keep the domain, that's a huge compliment to DooMer, Turb, and everyone else involved. The Quake name is still tied to revenue for id. No more bitching and passing the buck to "big brother corp IGN" about rules and standards -- we'd be the ones responsible for making sure the content of the site presents an acceptable public "inter"-face for the community and the brand. Or at least the admins and mods would.

Which is a good thing, IMO. There are plenty of sites where you can look at tits and poo if you want -- I'd be happy if this one stayed as work-safe(ish) and R-rated as it always has been.

Just my $0.02, of course.

Yes, there will still have to be a certain level of quality to make sure it's work safe, as well we will continue to be the official Quake 3 community site.
