Re: Starcraft 2 wont support LANplay
Of course not, plained. Referring to those game designers who seem to have a handle on the pulse of the industry. LAN games are the best kinda play. Nothing like playing people you see every day, pwn em, then go get shit faced with em. And, Starcraft is the BEST game there is for LAN work.

Re: Starcraft 2 wont support LANplay
Maybe not a deal breaker after all, depending on how they intend on implementing this. I think they're trying to stamp out pirated copies from playing versus entirely by forcing all players to play over Battle.net.ncGamers also got a clarification from Blizzard, shortly after the interview, saying the choice of excluding a LAN feature "is because of the planned technology to be incorporated into Battle.net," a topic they will reveal more about at a later date.

Re: Starcraft 2 wont support LANplay
WTF. This is just about the only reason I was looking forward to SC2. I don't play SC on BattleNet - ever - because I'm not that good and I constantly get owned.MKJ wrote:.. cause who likes to play local MP, right?

Unless they have a good ranking and friend-finding system on BattleNet, I'm not going to bother buying it.
And then, even if they do, can multiple PCs connect from the same house and play a game together through BattleNet? If not, I probably still won't buy it.
What a classy move.
Re: Starcraft 2 wont support LANplay
That statement leads me to believe that they will be implementing some sort of LAN-like feature into Battle.net. I really don't think that Blizzard is that stupid that they wouldn't want to have local MP in a sequel to a game as hugely successful as Starcraft.IncGamers also got a clarification from Blizzard, shortly after the interview, saying the choice of excluding a LAN feature "is because of the planned technology to be incorporated into Battle.net," a topic they will reveal more about at a later date.

Re: Starcraft 2 wont support LANplay
LAN games are pointless in a world where games basically have built in social networking communities and everyone* has a good internet connection. The only thing you lose is that everyone has to have a battle.net login to be able to play but historically you could play LAN games by "pirating" off a single legal copy of the game.
One cool thing to note about battle.net is their new system allows you to use the same login for WoW, SC2, and D3.

Re: Starcraft 2 wont support LANplay
Yeah I reckon they let people organize private games online. Sounds reasonable, although I'm not sure how that works out with latency and stuff.
Re: Starcraft 2 wont support LANplay
bliz might incorporate it into battle.net, but this brings a slew of problems
first, you would need to connect every computer to the 'net. usually not the ideal situation during large lan parties. it would also require some portmapping, which is another problem LAN
it might work through battle.net but this adds some unneeded limitations to the setup :-/

Re: Starcraft 2 wont support LANplay
Good way to alienate your fanbase if anything. Though I imagine Blizzard has something else planned that will use Bnet 2.0 to create VPN/VLAN play or something to that effect, either way still a very lame move.
Re: Starcraft 2 wont support LANplay
The port mapping probably won't be an issue, but the more people you want to play together, the better your internet connection will have to be.
At what point does it start lagging every couple of minutes?

Re: Starcraft 2 wont support LANplay
battle.net could be used only for matchmaking, with the actual matches being p2p..
i dont think the average consumer knows anything about portmapping, let alone getting it to work properly on more than 1 computer :[

Re: Starcraft 2 wont support LANplay
This is really surprising, actually. Starcraft is the most popular competitive game at lan events, especially in korea. They are really pushing this to be the end all be all of competitive gaming, but they remove lan play?
Re: Starcraft 2 wont support LANplay
For some reason I imagine then doing their own distribution platform like Steam. Where you only need to connect once to verify your key and account.
Re: Starcraft 2 wont support LANplay
it's for piracy reasons, of course they want all players to login to Battlenet and validate their identity
it will be cracked right away anyway, but that's the reason

Re: Starcraft 2 wont support LANplay
oh please
what ever happened to Blizzard's Spawn system?
you could install the game as a 'spawn', which meant only the MP portion would be installed for LAN and direct IP play. it would only work if connected to the full version which spawned this MP only install.
most excellent and very user friendly. no need to buy the game 3 times if you and e.g. your brothers want to play in LAN.
this worked for Diablo as well. excellent

I remember Need for Speed 2 had this feature as well.
