What Amidy said. You probably either have to set something in the BIOS, or just clear the CMOS.AmIdYfReAk wrote:try clearing the CMOS before...

How is this done, take out the little battery?
Re: Windows Security Center virus
Usually a jumper on the mother board. You move the jumper from one set of pins to another and back again. Got a manual for the board? If not, you can usually download one from the manufacturers site.
Re: Windows Security Center virus
Most newer motherboards don't require you to reset with a jumper, but if you do it's usually moving it from 1-2 to 2-3 or something like that.
Removing the 20/24-pin ATX motherboard power connector and the battery should do the trick.

Andy, what one did you do?
did you actually follow the manual and reset the CMOS? ( Move the pin, press the power button a few times, then move it back and power it on ) or did you try spazduh's way?

I suggest getting the motherboard manual and referencing it. You didn't kill the motherboard, it just needs to be reset.

Re: Windows Security Center virus
i'm tempted to build another computer and get that virii and see what i can do....
Re: Windows Security Center virus
yes, we break things. i have succeeded yet again.MKJ wrote:lol, quitter

I have enough monies to get a new mobo, might do it.
so i can 'use' the laptop in safemode (stil cant use FF for more than 1 minute) but I can process photos. This involves plugging in the mem card and taking the photos off. That's IT, nothing goes on the card. Then i plug the card into my dads laptop to load some photos onto it and guess what shows up? WINDOWS SECURITY CENTER VIRUS. unbelievable.
so this means that every file on every drive i have is infected and i'd have to burn everything in a fire in order to kill it, then start over.... i think i'll just caveman it for a while instead.
Re: Windows Security Center virus
I'm starting to get scared browsing this forum because of you... it might infect the forum and then my computer.

Re: Windows Security Center virus
I basically can either completely start from ground zero or get a mac. either way sucks balls.
Re: Windows Security Center virus
wouldn't be surprised really. it just boggles my mind that it would be on the memory card for the camera... but so far it is pretty much proven that anything plugged into or had any contact with my laptop has been infected and infects other computers simply by plugging it into a usb port. I want to find the guy that made this bleed him to death.obsidian wrote:I'm starting to get scared browsing this forum because of you... it might infect the forum and then my computer.
Re: Windows Security Center virus
ok so i put ubuntu on the laptop tonight and it works... finally can get on the internet. Now... can i get to all the files on the hard drive through ubuntu?
Re: Windows Security Center virus
Where are the files, on a partition or external? Ubuntu can read and write on both FAT32 and NTFS partitions now, so yes, you can retrieve the files. Be careful, I have no idea how this virus works so if the files are somehow corrupted as well, you may potentially be spreading it around.

Re: Windows Security Center virus
I searched around and found instructions on how to map the ntfs partition, so now I can get to all my files which is a BIG deal... good thing too, that's the only reason I wouldn't reformat: too many files that weren't backed up.
I am liking this ubuntu setup though it's quite nice. Although ctrl+c doesn't copy? There's probably a setting for that.

Re: Windows Security Center virus
have you already tried ubcd4win? would need an uninfected machine and a copy of XP SP3 to build the CD but it can be much easier to work with if you're not used to linux:
http://www.ubcd4win.com/
it's a customisable minimal windows environment on a bootable CD.
used that with the free malwarebytes anti-malware tool to clean up a mates laptop recently and it was fine:
http://majorgeeks.com/Malwarebytes_Anti ... d5756.html
iirc, you'll need that setup file to add the malwarebytes plugin to ubcd4win.
even if you can't clean it up, you should be able to use one of the anti-virus tools to identify the little bugger.

Re: Windows Security Center virus
Here's the new plan: use ubuntu on the laptop for good, and rebuild the desktop box. I can use the power supply and memory, but I'd like to just get a new hard drive, mobo, processor, and graphics card that way I can run modern warfare 2 at a decently playable rate.
Now to start finding good components... any suggestions? I'm going to browse newegg for a while tonight and since i have a lot of overtime hours, $400 is a good limit.
The ram in there now is DDR 2 667, 4gb worth. The mobo says 'nforce 570 slit-a fsb 1066 with pci express'. It runs a pentium processor so yeah anything that can top that is great. It also runs SATAII.
thanks for all the help so far, really appreciate it!
