If you dig through the project downloads you can get x64 builds if you're running x64.DTS wrote:I just realised I already have it installed. I forgot I installed it before. Yeah the picture quality is good. Anyway I have the latest version now.
To those who said it seems over-complicated: You don't have to do anything with it, it works just like any other codec. Sure, there are probably some extra things you can do with it, but I haven't used them AFAIK, and the picture quality is good, like I said.
Here's a guide on how to upscale video using it, it makes things look much better- http://www.neowin.net/forum/index.php?showtopic=422992

Re: video players?
how exactly does upconverting work? I looked through the wiki but it doesn't seem to shed light on the magic. If the source is 640 res, how can you get higher detail? Does it use some sort of vectorizing algorithm?

Re: video players?
i like vlc, but it could definitely be a lot better. i don't understand why its hard to find the replay button. or repeat button, or whatever it is thatll make it keep replaying the same video.
also, i dont like the way it does playlists. it took them forever to implement the roll over GUI in maximized screen mode.
i've also noticed more bugs with the later versions of it.
anyway, overall its not bad, but it could be better.

Re: video players?
hah yeah I just came back to this thread and apparently the word filter is a bit strict. What Fender said is what I typed.
Re: video players?
hm.. well I tried VLC but it seems too stripped-down for me. gripes:
The playlist window is just weird and keeps skipping back to the 'now playing' track/video whenever I try to browse.
opening video files will flick the player size to that vid's resolution... bit of a pain in the ass and can't find any way to lock the player size to what I resize it to (found some solution where the answer was to fix the video player at a permanent resolution, but this doesn't help for manual resize wishes!)
Also I can't find a non god-awful skin.
It might be an awesome non-resource hog but in terms of user friendliness atm it's not exactly dragging me away from wmp. (omfg sacrilege! etc etc yeah yeah whatever.)
edit: lol... and the media->open file (ctrl+O) command is fucked, after doing nothing but put on two skins and try them out (two of the top rated/downloaded skins). Had to reinstall it to get it to work again. great?

Re: video players?
haha... so my main gripe with vlc was the resize issue... but apparently there is a preference setting that works. However, it seems that preferences don't actually activate themselves after saving them until you quit and re-open VLC...? or is there some preference tick-box that I have to tick so that preferences enable without reloading the program? (keklol)
still have to resize the player manually everytime i open a vid in vlc for the first time though.. subsequent vids keep the player size until i close it.
Anyone got tips for getting a half-decent playlist window?

Re: video players?
vlc 1.0.0 is out. haven't installed it yet though. vlc is a bit hit'n'miss with DVDs - some it handles the menus fine, others it doesn't

Re: video players?
I used to use VLC, but I managed to break it somehow in Ubuntu 9.04 and now even after a full uninstall/reinstall it won't load at all.
GNOME MPlayer does just fine.

Re: video players?
I never fuck with resizing as one monitor is solely for videos but if you can't figure out why your playlist is going goofy shoot em an emal or comment or something. The beauty of open source developement.
Re: video players?
Think I might do that, so many tweakable features makes this a bit of a minor niggle, but it makes using the player to mess around with music (ie. party time, people messing around adding songs etc) a bit unworkable.
Had a look at the forums and the developers seem very open to discussion - great
