isn't it basically BF 1942 ported to another engine (and regurgitated for consoles for easy $$)?

Um, it uses the same theatres from BF1942's Pacific campaign but it is not a port. It was made from the ground up for Dice's current game engine and uses new features found in later releases of the franchise, for example: partially destructible environments (like buildings), squad mechanics (and ability to spawn near your squad), as well as some new stuff (air raids). The character classes of Battlefield 1942 have been shuffled around.

The only thing that I noticed was missing, aside from the Medic class (no longer needed), was the movable air craft carriers. They are now stationary.

EDIT: Also, it is an online release for 15 bucks, not a full-priced game.

It's great. There's also an XP ranking system, although I do not believe a higher rank has any influence on the game itself (which, IMO, is a good thing).

Movement physics are far better than in 1942 as well although I must say I find the airplanes to be completely uncontrollable. Guess it's a matter of practice.

the destruction is fucking oresome. i got genuinely blown away (PUN!) when i was taking cover in a building and a tankshell blew away one of the walls. quite the oh-shi-moment.

the other side of the coin:
[09:27] EmkaJee: people taking the jeep and racing off without a gunner. jumping out of the jeep at full speed leaving it in the sea
[09:27] EmkaJee: thx
[09:27] shaft: isntaproblem
[09:28] shaft: vehicals respawn every 3 seconds
[09:28] EmkaJee: its not about the vehicle, its about the nurd playing rambo
[09:29] EmkaJee: 3 people spawn at the same time at the same base, and 1 runs off without picking the other two up
[09:29] EmkaJee: i like these games but really it only works if you have a good team :-x

Agreed. On the other hand, I've been pleasantly surprised by the kindness of the players I've encountered so far. Most of the time, when spawning on a boat, I see a bunch of people running off to planes, but the rest genuinely seemed to wait for everyone to be aboard one of the landing ships before leaving.

It's incredible when two or three landing boats follow each other, dropping 10 - 12 people on the beach at once and everyone running as one group up the hill on Iwo Jima. You see people die left and right but when two or three make it to the top and take the flag, it's really cool.

Did you guys know there's a fourth map in BF1943? It will be unlocked once all players combined make 43 million kills.

Fly them in first person, not third person. Makes a huge difference.

Yeah, the ticker bar in the main menu says "it was too easy" heheh. To be honest the air superiority game mode (or whatever it's called) gets a bit boring after a few games.

I jumped into a game where shaft was playing (who, I might add, has incredible suicidal tendencies as his preferred method of destruction seems to be a head-on collision rather than actually using his plane's guns ;)) but it gets a bit repetitive. But I guess me being terrible at plane-ing doesn't help either.
