Q2 Question..

Post by v1l3 »

I know this isn't exactly a Q2 question spot...but, I was wondering if there is a cvar to change the lighting in-game(like r_gamma in Q3). It's a dark ass game, I can't see anything, especially on some of the custom maps that were made by certain mappers.

Try the id legends forum here on Q3W. (Made for topics like this.)

Anyway; set your desktop gamma higher - it works fine. Any changes possible with the original Q2 exe mess up the colour.

To change your desktop gamma go to Display Properties (right-click desktop/Properties) /Settings/Advanced/Your-graphics-card-name/Colour Correction/
You can save it as a preset aswell. On Nvidia cards at least.

Or; you could use a new Q2 exe like Quake 2 Evolved (Q2E) that has gamma setting built in. The trouble with that mod (Q2E is a graphics mod, not just a new exe) is it makes the blood extremely dark; though you can edit the blood image files to make them lighter again (using gamma in an image editing program like Paint Shop Pro), getting the brightness right for them takes several tries cause it looks different in-game. I say brightness but the technical term is gamma, cause brightness is a different setting altogether which you shouldn't change cause it makes things washed out.

You'll need to be familliar with zip files and pk3s (in this case called pk2s) to get the changes working. Pk3 (used in Q3) files and the Q2E pk2 files are just renamed zip files but you need the same directory structure and file names inside them to replace graphics or anything else.

Btw, the reason the Q2E blood image files are so dark is cause O'dium thinks (or thought) that the monsters should have black oil in their blood :offended:

If you bother to change the blood how I specified, you will be pleased by the spectacular directional gibbing and blood splatter that was incorporated into Q2E - just wait until you get the Rocket Launcher and use it on some Soldiers.

Edit: The direcitonal gibbing doesn't work in multiplayer cause (so they say) the server would need to use the Q2E exe.

Thanks for the comments guys :D

I tryed out the Q2E(which is very cool) like a year back, since it's been a while since I touched it..back in the mood now! On the Q2E I couldn't get it to save at present moment in single player..though great for multiplayer. I'll try your comments which will probably be the best fix. I tried the gl_modulate, but it only brightens the weapons and not the map.
I've had the Q2 Wiki page for a while, but I couldn't find anything in it, so I mentioned it here.
