HDMI male to DVI male adapter?

Post by KingManULTRA »

I have an HDMI to DVI cable but the image quality sucks so I wanna try:

HDMI cable from PS3 -> HDMI male to DVI male adapter -> Monitor

Is an adapter like this not possible because I can't find one?

The cables are digital. If the image quality sucks, it's not because of signal quality.

If you're going to or from an HDMI port from/to a DVI connection, you might be running into problems with HDMI overscan?

This monitor:

It has HDMI but the HDMI port does not support full range colors (only limited) which makes colors on PS3 lack vibrance. Furthermore, HDMI quality with this model is not good in general. This monitor was one of the first with HDMI so I'm not that concerned about it.

So I thought one solution was to convert HDMI to DVI. Works, full-range colors are now supported. Colors and black levels are much better. Overscan is disabled.

On PS3, image quality is fine too but regular text in particular looks weird. Somehow pixelated when looking at it from desktop distance (especially noticeable on smaller, regular text - particularly on websites with the PS3 web browser). I do not get this effect when I connect my computer over DVI. I do not get this effect with Xbox 360 over VGA.

VGA port on this monitor looks fantastic with consoles (ex: Xbox 360). What do I lose by going HDMI -> DVI -> VGA? EDIT: Via DVI->VGA adapter?

Won't work because:
HDMI is digital-only.
DVI can send digital or analog
VGA is analog only.

So because your source is digital and the end is analog, unless you have an intelligent convertor box sitting between them, the signal won't come through.

The pixellated text things still hints at an overscan-related issue. Can you try switching from 720 to 1080 or vice versa on the PS3, see if that makes any difference?

Overscan option in monitor settings is not selectable.

720p/1080p same issue. 720p text is very washed out and blurry.

EDIT: perhaps I'm mistaking a PS3 issue of pixelated texts for a cable problem  However, tiny icons exhibit the same effect and web browser text on PS3 still looks like ass though.
