A prime example of how uninformed (and apathetic) the average "outraged citizen" is when it comes to this and many other social issues:

When asked about taxes, Katy admits that she has no idea how much money she and her husband make. When asked about Socialist programs like medicare and social security, she had this to say:

"...You know, yeah, I mean, there are programs in place that the founders did not want to have here. I know there are people out there that can't afford health insurance, that can't afford a lot of different things, and, you know, with the founders, they thought and hoped that the goodness of the people would allow the people to take care of those who are doing without."

This woman's interview with Fox's Sean Hannity was also featured on yesterday's "The Daily Show" and she admitted that - after all her rambling - she didn't even listen to Senator Arlen Specter's answer to her question. To which Jon Stewart said,"Great! Welcome to Fox. Can you start on Monday?"

She is also a prime example of being a "child of empire" when she admitted that she "didn't care" about the Iraq invasion because America invading countries is a given, something that is normal, happens every day and shouldn't be thought about...let alone questioned.

I had a few beers tonight with a couple of friends. One of them took the position that the 'death panels' were pretty hard to disprove. The other one was a bit more 'libertarian' in the sense that he believed in the free market, and that private enterprise was giving us the best healthcare that money could buy.

It really only took about 15 minutes of discussion to realize that we all agreed on something: that healthcare in the hands of private companies is terrible for everyone (except said companies), and that something should be done about it.

Granted, at times it was a difficult 15 minutes, but even so we all came to a consensus.

she clearly doesn't know what the hell is going on, but i think when she was being asked about medicare and said that she thought people should help out those in need she meant that they should do so privately (eg- loan an unemployed friend a few hundred?) rather than the government taking over what she presumes was regarded as basic human decency in the Golden Age of the mythical founding fathers who brought the Constitution down from mount olympus on stone tablets signed by capitalist baby jesus or something.
again, she's ignorant... but not necessarily contradicting herself to the same extent as the angry birthers who shouted down "socialism" then admited they were on medicare themselves.

Somebody needs to do a more comprehensive poll about political education related to party affiliation (and throw in geographic location as well for the South).

I'm sure there is a WIDE range of information that follows the same trends you see in these polls about healthcare, whether Obama is a citizen, whether Hawaii is an actual state, etc...

Then when people say things like "The only people who are opposed to healthcare reform are the same people who believe that Saddam Hussein planned 9/11," it really will be the truth.
