There will have to be a balance at some point. Asset creation is getting more demanding, but better tools are also being created to make that asset creation easier. Even professional development companies can't solve every single problem by tossing additional man-hours at it. Better technology and software will make it easier.

Even recently, Carmack said something about taking a newly hired staff member and sitting him in front of id Studio and after a few pointers, he was able to go about on his own with the stamping tools and make some significant work. If the tools are intuitive, that lowers the learning curve and development time.

There's a mini-boom in the indie games market of late as well, with deployment of smaller games over technologies like Steam or the iPhone apps store, I think that's a healthy indicator that modding and independent game development is certainly not dead or dying. Most of these games are relatively light on graphics, but big on gameplay and innovation, and that's something that even big AAA studios have problems doing these days with their multi-million dollar investments that they can't take similar risks on.

Anyway, that's my glass half full take on things.
