hoi camera buffs

Post by vesp »

Any comments on the Fuji F200EXR compared to canon powershot range (probably the G9 seeing as that's in roughly the same price bracket at the moment)?

I know they're not amazing SLR's with the most bad-ass lenses etc, but i'm upgrading from my old compact which is... a canon ixus i (don't even know if it's meant to have a number - it's a brutal 4MP with no optical zoom) and I'm not quite ready to give an slr the time it requires to be worth the money!

much thanks :q3:

Am I wrong in being averse to cameras that take AA batteries rather than the we block-rechargeable ones? Past experience was always that these cameras sucked the AA's dry in less than a day.

Dunno tbh, I'm still swithering over the fuji EXR feature. here's a copypaste:
The Fujifilm Finepix F200EXR is potentially one of the most revolutionary cameras of 2009. It features Fujifilm's innocuous sounding EXR technology, which rather cleverly turns the Fuji F200 into three cameras in one. The first EXR mode shoots a high-res 12 megapixel picture, the second takes a 6 megapixel photo with less noise, and the third combines two 6 megapixel images taken at different exposures to capture more dynamic range.
photographyblog.com giving me most of my reviews at the moment... most prolific review site found after googling cameras

edit: considering I'm only going for a compact, and was looking for a camera that can take nice pics in normal and low-light situations, what do you camera experts think of that EXR nonsense?

Cheers DB, I realise this is a bit of a noob thread and appreciate the responses.

edits: sifting through reviews is a major fuckin pain.. half of them are written by people with high end SLRs and basically down-rate the compacts something awful by essentially comparing the compact's performance to their behemoth... pretty annoying.

:(

This may take longer than I thought.

unless you just want something that'll fit in your pocket, you could try the nikon D40 - an SLR but entry-level and at a price comparable to a good compact

Yea, compact is the key really. I wouldn't be able to do an SLR justice unless I put a lot of work into it (which I'm not goin to do at the moment).
The ixus I'm looking to replace is an old 4MP one but it's tiny and pocket sized (reason I got it in the first place) :)

leaning towards the fuji tbh, as it's meant to be good in low light situations, but I'll give it a handle this weekend as it's in stock down the road.

I love my powershot. I'd post pics but I'm in the process of moving and my main PC is boxed up. I've got an SD1200is. Takes like 200+ shots per charge, 10MP, 3X obptical, very small and the quality is great for typical use.
Be sure to actualy read he manual because it has some less-user friendly options somewhat hidden away (like 15 second exposure etc).

Well I had a handle and a tryout of the two I was torn between after comparing specs online.. the f200exr and the ixus100.
I've pretty much decided to go for the f200 after comparing them together - felt nicer in my hands (wasn't keen on the current ixus design with the sloping edges... felt like a bar of soap almost) and I was slightly more enamoured with the menus and buttons etc. Bit more zoom aswell, 5x as opposed to 3x, which was one of the things I'd been looking for after having no zoom at all for the last X years :s

Specs were pretty similar, and I've no brand preference or SLR-prejudice (as SO many of the review sites seem to have) so I think I'll be pretty happy with it.

(edit: by slr-prejudice I mean all the imba features that SLR's have that point&shoots don't, and then the surprise, nay even the horror(!) that some of these reviews then express when finding out that the compact doesn't compare in image quality, lens quality etc etc)
:p
