Plans on mapping for Wolfenstein?

Post by dichtfux »

I recently noticed that Wolfenstein has been released like 3 weeks ago. There doesn't seem to be a SDK or editor yet but anyway: does somebody have plans to make maps for it?

Just asking cause it feels like nobody cares for it. I didn't hear anything about the game so far from friends or mappers I know and the official forums seem rather quiet (and full of complaints). Pretty strange.

I was only aware of the game, because Carmack mentioned it in one of his interviews. Was that game based on the Doom 3 engine (idTech4)?

Yeah, it's actually based on a modified Doom 3 engine. But there is now SDK yet, since the PC version will be released not until the mid or end of september.

Not wanting to sound too pessimistic... this means the game has the same issues as D3 and Q4... no bots, and problematic net code... thus endeth MP mapping right there, IMO.

I may be a bit naive here, since I wouldn't be the one to program it, but should it not be possible to use the *released* Q3A bot code and add it to the idTech4 engines? Since everything is still pretty much brush based...

Na, it's there. Seen it in a store here in germany and you can order it all around the internet. Just bought a copy.

I guess that's true to a certain amount: I don't expect bots, no bots == annoying. Dunno about the net code. But I also think you're too pessimistic there. If there's enough players you don't need bots. And I guess it'll be large TDM maps and some objective-based stuff for MP anyway, things that are fun only on large public servers.

I really liked the SP, I'm hoping for an SDK so I can make a small singleplayer level.

PC release date was simultaneous with the consoles (I was playing it last night).

No word on SDK, though it sounds less likely due to recent layoffs at Endrant and Raven. :(

I would have loved to map for Wolf2 single player. But like everyone else, I don't think thats likely. The only really fair review I have read is on Kat's site. Personally I loved the SP game, and I think what the guys did with idtech4 is pretty astounding. The entire sorry saga is just so sad now.

Got my copy and just played some MP. There's few servers it seems (or the server browser is strange once more) and everybody seems to be playing TDM.

The objective mode sounds promising though simple compared to ETQW (judging on the things you have to that are shown on the map loading screens).

Imo it's a bit annoying that you can unlock things (better ammo, armor, additional grenades) with money you get for shooting ppl. The old stupid idea that ppl who play all day get better equipment and thus those who don't are fucked even more. I liked it way better the way it was done in TF2, where the stuff you can get always has pros and cons and rather changes the way you gotta use it instead of being definitely better.

Would be sad if there was no editor/SDK. I can hardly believe that, so common to release this stuff these days.

I feel that this is just another one of those games that will be forgotten about in the next couple of months.

Not worth the effort and time needed to get a decent map put together even if the SDK were out. Unless you're doing it for yourself.

Considering it's running on a modded idtech4 engine you might as well just play around with Doom 3 or Quake 4 instead.

An SDK for MP was more likely than one for SP, but that wasn't a guaranty that an SDK was going to be released for either in the first place.

Definately agree with donkey, Raven did an exceptional job artistically with SP, I still have a hard time believing it's idtech4. I'd like the SP tools to be released :sly:

Ahpp ahpp... the game can look really really bad in SP on some places, I find it hard to belive it's not 2002 when I see some outside areas... honestly.

MP looks like rtcw on my box. But that cause my box is crappy and everything is on lowest I guess. Graphics arent that important for MP anyway, but it's not that there's cool new MP gameplay or anything that's really new. At least that's my impression so far.

That's really interesting. I do agree that the outside areas are in some places not of the same quality as the interiors, kind of over saturated with light and washed out. But really, to my eye, the ineriors especially are very well done. A lot of subtle improvements to idtech4. Far better for me than the blurry resolution we get in UT3. I know it's a personal preference, but better in many ways than Crysis too.

I have said it before, some of the inside areas could be from a commandos game, they look that good! But at the same time, some of the outside areas looks so bad, it hurts your eyes, especially the light and also sometimes how it's built... everything from clipping errors, strange brushes, etc
