When and why did you start playing quake?

Post by warribbons »

Heya, I'm new to this forum, and from what I see, I really like it here.

I started playing quake when I was about 6 years old, introduced by my uncle. Stopped playing it after a couple of months, cause my auntie thought it was too violent.

Started up again when Quake Live was in closed beta. Loved it. My world has been rocked by Quake ever since.

Bought Quake 3+Team Arena
Besides that, Quake is awesome.

Great for the mind, body and soul.

i started playing quake when i got a new computer (a 586 100 mhz, not a pentium), the 3d was amazing after doom which i had been mapping for. frame rates were shocking lol ahhh the quaketest builds, now there were some ugly interfaces... but deathmatch on my 14.4 k modem was cutting edge! alas, to poor to get a voodoo1 but hay, glquake had not been released yet.. wow all over the place here boowaaa?

if you mean quake 3, then say that, quake nerds hate that kinda shit :p

I belong to q3 era, still and all, q2(engine-based games) is more appealing than q3 for non-sensible reason.

I kinda started with Quake 2, then found out the rest from there. The main game I played was Action Quake 2, which at the time was better than anything.

I bought Q2 shortly after it was released. I had a cable modem in a test market. Uncapped and unlimited IP addresses. Basically had 10MBit down and a T1 up. Played absolutely tons of hours of LMCTF, then switched to Q3 CTF and TA when it was released. Then came the Q3W CA days. I've played a little bit of QL, but not very much.

Got the demo, had a crappy internet link and too much time on my hands, so I joined the fray. This is Q1 and 1995 we're talking about.

I remember getting the first voodoo card to run q1 in svga on a dx2-66 and before that playing doom on a sx2-50, 4mb ram and 100mb hard drive. it cost me £1500!

I think it's 1.11 - 1.16n that has a lot of freezetag rail servers running.

Also, the 1.16n release was the version that the Dreamcast version of Quake 3 ran, and there are still some servers for those players sitting up and running.

Quake 3 is indeed one of those gems hard to come by. Game play unlike anything else out there...it can be an extreme game of concentration and action. The only game I have ever played that literally manages to raise my heart rate in the midst of a good fight...that says it all really.

I applaud id for creating this game, which is to say the least an understatement.

Quake on little buddy and know that you are part of something special in the gaming scene.

Right on the dot! She has a usual server.

@warribbons: everything below <1.16 was either a demo or a beta release, I think, and probably not floating around on Das Internet anymore. Any reason why the two of you can't upgrade to (at least) 1.16n?

@Zyte: me too, I didn't really start playing until late 2000 or early 2001. Was too addicted to Q2 CTF until then.

I started playing Q1 on a Sega Saturn, bought Q2 for Playstation...and ended up buying a Sega Dreamcast and the Q3A game on the same day that Q3 came out for it. I started playing it online against PC players on the Sega servers which were on 1.16n for the PC players...with the damn controller(completely pointless), than bought the mouse for it which needed to be cleaned once an hour to be used, or the ball inside of it would get stuck which would kill you during a match...so I went back to the controller. =/ I ended up joining the most powerful instagib clan..which one of the players made a mod called "shotty"(which now is the Deathgun Mod) which is a server side mod that would let the Dreamcast players play a mod. The only other played mod was Zappy's Homing Rockets and Excessive.

My clan kept bothering to get onto a PC...I had never even touched a PC in my life...I got a used HP Windows 98, Pentium 2 computer..which was really useless for anything beyond 1.16n. I ended up buying "Quake 3 Gold" (pr1.30) which released Team Arena with it, which I couldn't even play because it was too much for the computer. So, I had taken all of the .pk3 files other than pak0, pak1, and pak2.pk3's and set up 1.16n instead of using 1.30.
So, I kept playing with that clan and most of them taught me how to use my computer online when we weren't playing. I eventually got better at playing since I wasn't Dreamcast, and I started beating all of the players that had been beating me badly over the last year and a half. Every one wasn't liking me so much anymore..and they started calling me a "bot" which had spread..and was completely ridiculous obviously. I ended up changing my name and played against people I had known for so long, and keeping my mouth shut. I eventually said screw off to the whole Sega server thing, and went OSP1.0.

The thing that really led me to get Q3A originally was that Doom was in it, or his skin should I say. If Q3 was never invented, it's possibly that I would never even touched a pc?

Let's see, I was never into Q1 or Q2, but played Hexen. Picked up Quake 3 for PS2 when it was first released. Got into strafing and stuff freshman year of high school after a friend told me about it. Didn't play much for a few years until 2005/2006 where I wanted to start getting better at the game. Got better in Rocket Arena thankfully and progressed from there.

Similar, without the Voodoo. Except it was 386 sx-33 70 mb drive, and 2 mb ram for doom. It was a Tandy. Quake 1 I had a 486 dx4 100, 8 mb ram and 2 mb video ram. Q2 I had a top of the line Compaq presario with a P166 16 mb ram, still no vid card. Q3 it was an Athlon 600 mhz with a Riva TNT2 16 mb, 10 gig hd, and sound blaster. Q3 is the only one that took me a bit of time to actually get after it came out. I still play through q1 and q2 occasionally.
