120hz LCD Monitors

Post by Foo »

Looks like nVidia's 3d setup will finally give 120hz monitors some traction on the market.

Ignoring the 3d stuff, these panels should re-enable the fast-motion smooth and responsive display you used to be able to get by running a crt at 120hz. Fast-action gaming becomes much more fun.

ASUS are launching a laptop with a 120hz screen this month: http://3dvision-blog.com/asus-to-launch ... -november/

Samsung have a 22" 120hz panel on the market right now: http://www.tweaknews.net/reviews/samsun ... or_review/

Viewsonic have the VX2265wm 22" panel out, too: http://www.viewsonic.com/products/deskt ... on-lcd.htm

Its also possible to find these bundled with the nvidia 3d glasses.

The screens require a 'dual link' dvi cable from your graphics card. At first I assumed that meant 2 x dvi from the card to the panel but it's just a single cable with more pins.

Use to be able to get? What serious gamer doesn't still use CRT?

There are 600 Hz LCD TVs, and the monitors you listed have a lower res than 1080p. WTF is this shit? You expect me to buy this? I'm sticking with my CRT for now. CRTs still produce better colour anyway. OLED, now that could replace CRTs for gaming on. Console games are another matter of course, since they run at a standard TV refresh rate.

Alright, LCDs do have one advantage over CRTs, which is they can be very big without being very deep. But you listed 22" monitors, not that much bigger than a 19" 4:3 monitor amiright? I mean, not like "wow this monitor is so much bigger!" to the point where you are not going to care about the worse colour reproduction.

Edit: I got a bit carried away in the first paragraph and forgot to mention that the 600 Hz LCD technology should be being paired with 600 Hz graphics cards and a 600 Hz version of Q3. Not for putting fake frames between low fps videos frames.

Edit2: Maybe save that for OLED, I'd be annoyed to have to sacrifice colour accuracy to get more fps. Having said that, I play Q3 in 16 bit colour to get more fps so I dunno maybe I wouldn't mind much. I play emulators though and I want them to look right.

You do realize that you can adjust the color don't you? I play emulators also and they look pretty damn accurate to me.

DTS is going to be so pissed when OLED fails.

is it 120Hz panel side? or 120hz?

All of the TV's that are on the market are 120Hz sampling on the panel, but with a 60hz input.

I'm wondering if those monitors are the same.

These are true 120hz. Hence why a dual-link cable is needed even though the resolution isn't so high.

The nvidia glasses work on by shuttering the lenses, so a true 120hz panel is needed to give a 60hz output when using the 3d. Fake 120hz wouldn't cut it.

Hey so I finished putting together a new PC and picked up the Samsung 2233rx.

This thing is perfect for FPS games. 120hz mode is smooth as silk and behaves just the same as putting a CRT to 120hz, except with this you can do it all the way up to 1680*1050 native res.

The monitor's a bit of a one-trick pony so there's no extra inputs for VGA or composite etc. Still, I don't care, it's perfect for the quakes

Gaming-oriented second opinion here:

The video bit doesn't make much sense until he freeze-frames to demonstrate the lack of tearing.
