Old laptop (PIII era) and it doesn't let me use resolutions higher than 800x600. I think its native resolution is at least 1024x768. Is this a driver issue? How can I find appropriate drivers for its graphics card? It's a Toshiba Satellite Pro 4600.

What does the output of `lspci` look like?

Aha! Fair enough, it spat out a bunch of hardware info, the pertinent one in this case being:
Trident Microsystems CyberBlade/XP (rev 63)

That's some oldskool hardware. You'll probably need to hack your xorg.conf a little for this to get it to work. You might want to give this example config a try: http://ubuntuforums.org/showpost.php?p= ... ostcount=9
