QL player here thinking of transitioning to Q3A, suggestions

Post by skaldicpoet9 »

Hey there everyone! I am new here to the forums and have a few questions regarding Quake 3 Arena. For the past few months I have been having a blast on Quake Live, however, I am missing some of the things that makes me glad to be a pc gamer, namely the mods and the community around a dedicated server. Quake Live is fun to hop on and frag some random people but I feel like there should be much more to the experience. I have been doing a little reading on Quake 3 Arena and it sounds right up my alley. I don't have a problem with trying to keep up with veterans (I already do that on a regualr basis on CS:S) so I am not worried about the learning curve, I just want to know what those that have tried both games think about each game and what they believe to be their strengths/weaknesses. What are your guy's feelings on Quake Live vs. Quake 3 Arena? I am mostly thinking about this from a competitive (community)/extensibility (mods) angle so keep that in mind.

Check out some threads about qlive on this forum, there are several opinions posted. I'm not going to reply really in depth since i don't have the time right now. But check out quake 3, read up on OSP and CPMA mods, which are unique in their own ways (especially cpma) and try those out. See what suits you best.

If you're looking for some competitive games as opposed to random fragging as you call it, why not look for a clan and move from there? The quake live 'scene' is arguably more alive then q3's right now, and definitely bigger.

Right on, thanks for the reply. Yeah, from what I can see, for the most part it seems like Q3A games are a little more scarce than just finding a decent clan on QL. However, I really want the option to mod out Quake and use custom maps. I think I will continue to play QL and pick up Q3A when I get the money, hell, it is cheap enough might as well. Plus I am sure that I can find a good group of people to play with if I really tried.

Hi,

Why don't you try our minimalistic free Q3A clone called Q3MIN? It can use mods made for Q3A and can run practically any custom map. You can find it here if you are interested:

http://www.q3min.org

There is a public Q3MIN server provided by Rainbow Networks, the link is on the main RN page here:

http://rainbow.furver.se

And we intend to set up more servers soon. :)
