Moving from Vista to W7 so what do I backup?

Post by Whiskey 7 »

Thought I'd ask here for assistance :D and your advice is appreciated.
I am about to move to Windows 7 from Vista, and asking what to backup, reinstall?
I think there are some things I might forget so I bought an external 1Tb drive today to capture all (I hope) :smirk:

Also, I am planning to add some RAM (4Gb) and a SSD (to house the OS if nothing else).

Current important specs are
Intel S775 Core 2 Q6600 Quad-Core CPU
Gigabyte P35C-DS3R Motherboard
DDR2 4GB Geil 800MHz Dual Channel DDR2 Kit
3x 320GB Western Digital YS 7200rpm 16M SATA HDDs (RAID 5 config)
1 x 320GB Western Digital YS 7200rpm 16M SATA HDD for data and backups
ASUS NVIDIA GeForce 8800GTS 512M PCIe Video Card
24" Samsung 245B LCD Monitor

Antec P182 Performance One Case
Antec Neo Power 650 Watt ATX Power Supply Ver 2.2 EPS 12V
Black Utopia M Multimedia 101 Keyboard PS2
Black Utopia Optical Mouse PS2
Black Pioneer DVD Multi Rewriter SATA 18 Dual layer
Logitech Speakers and Headset

Is/are there anything I might forget before I format the old HDDs after copying to the ext HDD.

Logically mail backup, FF favorites, passwords, history, all documents & pics etc, but is there any hidden stuff I should grab?

itunes data if you use it, or you'll have to re-purchase.

Quake configs.

Downloads folder.

Video game custom content e.g. pk3s

Go through your web accounts and check you're not relying on firefox cacheing any passwords... make sure you know them all.

Sweet rig BTW ;)

Thanks, I would have trusted a firefox backup to save the passwords :smirk: but by your advice I will put pent to paper

Re the rig, well just over 2 years old. Thought of a new build but figured it wasn't that bad, just going to add as above, probably last another year or two :)

If you use firefox get the add on xmarks.
It can save your favorites and passwords.
Don't forget stuff in your C:\Documents and Settings\*user* folder.
There's also hidden stuff, like if you play COD:WAW, then you need to back up your profile. C:\Documents and Settings\*user*\Local Settings\Application Data\Activision
I'd at least image that C drive just in case you forgot something.
Also if you use Outlook, you'll want to back up your .pst file.

MozBackUp works better for that.

actually, now is a good time to re-evaluate your password situation/storage. the fact that you don't remember them isn't good.

*edit* i see foo already touched on this. whoopsie.
