is this even posible? ( amd 64 content inside )

Post by AmIdYfReAk »

trying to work out some random bugs in this computer, i decided to try stressing it and see how hot it gets...

check this out:

According to AMD, the Winchester core shouldn't go above 65C at ANY point in time.
i honestly did NOT think a CPU could take that kinda torture.

If that's a real reading, the processor's taking a long walk off a short cliff... You should pull the heatsink and sort it out asap. Would also be worth figuring out if the bios can be set to shut down on overheat.

Hopefully it's just a misreading from the program. Check the current temp in the program vs the BIOS and see if they line up.

Might have fried the processor already there though dude.

What Foo said and this: how hot does the CPU get when idle and when playing a game or similar intensive task?

Technically, modern CPUs should be able to handle temperatures up to 110 C (it's not uncommon to see the CPU in a busy server reach 95 C). But desktop systems should probably never go beyond ~65 C.

Well, apparently its been running like this for a little over a year...

The idle temps ( with cool'n'quiet enabled ) where ~28C. and loaded it would get up to 122C.

trying to figure it out i reseated the stock HSF with some AC5 to try and get the temps down, and it made little to no change.

so i went out and got a Skyth Katina 3 HSF, and again, it didn't make a damned change!

Thinking about it for a while, a random thought came to me, "what if its the Thermal compound between the Cpu core and the heat spreader?"

so i goggled around, and found a few guides on how to remove the "IHS", after a few hours of trying to remove the damned thing.. i finally got it..

And it turns out, i was right, the thermal compound seemed like nothing more then chalk! it was more of an insulator then anything.

So i cleaned it out, applied AC5 to the core, put the IHS back on, applied AC5 to it, and reseated the HSF.. and this is the turn out.

( 8 and a bit hours of stressing )

So yeah, if you have a amd 64 that just wont cool down, this may be something to try :)

Good job. Apparently what you did carried a very high risk of killing the cpu by cutting into capacitors and such like, so you did well.
Btw, did you mean AS5, as in arctic silver 5?
You could try stressing it on just small FFT's, that's the one I select. I think that creates more heat than blend if you want to really stress it, but anyway, from 109c to 48c is brilliant.

yeah, i nicked two of the Surface mount transistors and shaved some of the Green off till i saw copper..

i wasn't sure it was going to post/work again, and it actually didn't... then i noticed that damned 4 pin was not plugged in!

as for the TFT's, i was running the blend because i put the ram back to its proper timings but the mobo doesn't allow changed to voltage so there is no way to bump it the .2V that it needs... but it seems to be stable.

and yeah, AC5 = Artic solver 5.

Wow, thats intense. Here's a screenshot I made to compare my CPU to yours, mine being a San Diego core.
