Quake Live textures in Quake 3

Hey, do any of you guys know if it's legal to use Quake Live textures in regular Quake 3 maps? I know you aren't usually supposed to use textures from one game in another, but since Quake Live is free, I wonder if it would it be okay to use/redistribute the textures?

Technically, it would not be legal since it is still covered under copyright, regardless of whether the game is free or not. Quake 3 for example, has the source code released under a GPL license and yet, the game assets are still protected by the original copyrights. So while the code is free, the game assets are not.

Better yet, go to cgtextures or myangs and "MAKE" clones. Simple.
