Not-so-random freezes in Quake 3

Post by Tubamajuba »

After reading other similar topics in which people had similar problems, I made sure my motherboard drivers (and video) were updated, but the problem still exists.

So far, after a couple hours of playing, the only place this has happened is in Q3DM4. Whenever entering the room of the first (only? I don't know) teleporter in the level (towards the left once you go up the stairs), the game freezes completely after about 1 to 2 seconds. It only freezes in that room in that level... what might the problem be?

that is an odd problem.

Try
Backup all the custom maps and mods you have in your quake3 folder
then
un-install quake3 then re-install quake3
then apply the newest point release found here http://www.quake3world.com/forum/viewto ... 19&t=21699

now you have a fresh install of quake3 .. perhaps a custom map or mod is causing havoc and this is how to test that

Good idea ax... custom maps interfering with the default map shaders is the only thing that seems possible.

I've never heard of a level-specific crash on Q3 on one of the maps that shipped with the game.

And if that fixes it, use a binary search to figure which pk3 is causing the problem.

Well see, that's the problem... I can't exactly uninstall it, because I'm just playing the game with the data copied to the hard drive. Every time I've tried to properly install it, I get a data copying error "-113" once the install program actually attempts to copy the files. I also have no custom mods or maps installed.

Now, I don't know if this is possible, but is there a place where I can download a set of fresh PAK files? It sounds like that would solve the problem.

no no no

just cut and paste into a temporary folder all .pk3 files that DO NOT start with pak

i think that should work

Well, I fixed the problem.

The problem for some reason was with the 1.30 files. I was able to do the point release upgrade, and the glitch was fixed. Still doesn't explain why it only occurred in one room in one level... very odd.

Thanks for the help and support!
