Quake Live or Quake III
Quake Live or Quake III
I just got back into Quake after trying out Quake Live. I was living under a rock and never even knew Live existed until now. I lost two legitimate CD keys and both disks are scratched to hell, so let me get to the point.
Which version, Live or regular Quake III, has the most active/abundant multilayer users?
I'll re-buy Quake 3 for the 3rd time if I find that it has the most players (by a good margin of course).
Quake Live has like 3 or 4 servers I can choose from, and that is nothing compared to all the servers I found in 2006 Q3, but maybe its even worse for the real Quake III. It could also be that I suck and Quake Live just skill-matches with the only 3 servers I rank with.

Re: Quake Live or Quake III
As far as most multiplayers users, Quake live. With Q3, you will have trouble finding servers these days, and you'd have to go with a mod like OSP or CPMA.
Quake live has a loads of players, and all kinds of skill levels.
Where are you located? I have no problem finding servers whatsoever.

Re: Quake Live or Quake III
quake live became far more active then q3, but still you will have no problem finding games in q3. quake live has activity non stop but isnt as polished as say cpma, which has over one thousand servers running
Re: Quake Live or Quake III
I think I play at the wrong time. When I play at 12:00am I cant really find any servers, but I guess since I filter by region (NE USA) everyone is asleep or something.. There ARE a lot of servers, but not a lot of choices between game types. Like there used to be servers for Q3DM17 in instagib, free for all, Team DM, etc and such for every other map too.
Lets just say I'm stuck in the old days and I thought this game was invincible

Re: Quake Live or Quake III
get the latest point release and dont use the ingame server broser. you will have plenty of games to play at any given time. i use maxbrowse btw.
Re: Quake Live or Quake III
One of quakelive's big advantages is its pings. You can play a server 3000 miles away and still get a decent ping under a 100. I get 90 from london to new york, or 80 from london to moscow. Quake3 gave me pings to those places way way higher.
Re: Quake Live or Quake III
no drum.
there's no way id updated the netcode and you got a better internetconnection over time.
geez

Re: Quake Live or Quake III
Well these people have also commented on it. http://www.quakelive.com/forum/showthre ... light=ping
Oh well maybe there isn't a difference. Perhaps there's something wrong with the ping reading I get on qlive due to some new updates, I don't know.
But I get 90's to new york, whereas I just went on a q3a server on the east cost of USA and was hitting 130.

Re: Quake Live or Quake III
Stock Q3 has (had?) a bug where the scoreboard ping is a little off but I forgot if the actual ping is higher or lower. Anyway, it's fixed in CPMA so it is probably fixed in Qlive as well.
Just to be sure, the only thing different is the displayed ping. The laws of nature still apply.

Re: Quake Live or Quake III
yeah, in vq3 you could fudge your ping by changing snaps (iirc). going from 20 to 40 could bump you up by 10ms on the scoreboard... useful trick when haggling about match servers.
Re: Quake Live or Quake III
Thanks for the help guys.
I would have thanked MKJ as well, but all he offered was an eye rolling smiley and I've already got one of those.
