position weapon in q3

I have a torso/upper model md3 that the weapon tag position is off by a little bit. In the third person view the weapon looks odd because of this. (located around the wrist area)
moving the tag positions on the weapon or torso are not currently an option

I am able to adjust the position of the weapon and also adjust the roll/pitch/yaw. I can get it close to the correct position, but when I change weapons, during the torso animations for weapon lowering, the weapon jumps to a different position and is no longer located in the players hand.

I can't figure out where to make the adjustments to prevent this from happening.

Does anyone have any ideas of where to look or how I might accomplish this?
