All signs seem to point to a significant Powermac upgrade soon. Definitely expect something before August, maybe even this month.
I'm thinking dual core quads, PCI-Express for starters.
Might as well wait, as I don't see the Doom performance I was hoping for with our current crop. Would feel extremely pissed if I missed out on this one.
I expect 2.8GHz, possibly 3.0GHz with a Dual-layer DVD burning option. Otherwise I'd expect some non PowerMac announcement, such as a quad processor workstation or the iHome media center. I dont think PCIe will be out until we get a motherboard revision, such as that which will come with support for a dual-core processor...
...but then again I'm just pulling this shit out of my ass...wtf do i know?
There's been a lot of talk about dual core CPUs. I'd expect that to be the next major update, as opposed to a regular speed bump.
I'm waiting for the Cell processor or until this G5 can't run the OS to my requirements. I can't imagine the speed bump from a dual 2Ghz would be worth the cost at the moment.
For the prices, they're still not giving the best configurations. I'd expect they'd do 512MB RAM for the low end models, 1GB for the mid-range, and 1GB-1.5GB for the high-end models. Heck, even 512/768/1GB would be cool. 300+GB hard drives would be nice on the high end as well...
I had fun in a similar thread at IMG: I posted "only the terminally deluded would be disappointed by this update" and then watched the thread pile up with "I'm really disappointed because they're not dual-core/PCI-E/bright yellow/fiendish man-machine hybrids"....
Not to derail the thread, but I seriously don't see the point in PowerMacs. (esp after this "upgrade")
Apple notebooks are fantastic, but the Powermacs just don't deliver enough bang for the buck imo. Oh well.
Desktop PC and Apple notebook still seems like the best combination.
They deliver pleanty of bang, but their applications are rather specialized. They're great machines for creative professionals and for the scientific community.
They own for music, seriously - in fact for all media. The other day I was bouncing a song down with one processor and encoding video with the other, and I didn't even realize until I ran "top"

Um...isn't the RAM dual channel, or at least needing to be installed in pairs? For 768, you'd have to do 512+128x2, which would be....well, dumb.
I currently don't own a Mac, but I'm really liking the looks of Tiger. I think the next Mac I'd buy would be a Mac Mini or iBook G4.
The mac mini's a really neat computer (my dad has one), but unfortunately it doesn't do all the features of tiger. I'd go for the laptop any day (unless I only had £350)
