I'm currenty second in command of 30 electricians, you fool. I'm directly in command of 12 those electricians. I attend project meetings, handle inspections and coordinate completion dates with various contractors. I'm also in charge of design, installation and completion of all low and high voltage systems in 3 of the 4 buildings on my project. I've got all the power and clout I need.

BTW, I'm not second in command. I'm third in command. And it's a bit more than 30.

Well I guess it would come down to how you look at it really. At the company I work for there is a President, Vice President and General Manager, all of which are above me. The President and VP act as senior project managers. Each project is assigned to a Senior PM and a PM.

So if you look at it from the ultimate standpoint, I would be 4th in command.

Since the President and VP aren't directly involved in every project, you could look at it from a positional standpoint (Senior PM, GM and PM). Which would put me 3rd in command.

Since the GM facilitates the resolution of contract issues and negotiates vendor buy outs, but doesn’t have much to do with the day to day operations, you could look at from the standpoint of how the project is assigned (Senior PM and PM). Which would put me 2nd in command.

However, it is quite clear around the office that the President, VP and GM all favor the 2nd in command standpoint because it limits their somewhat unnecessary involvement in every project and allows them more time to complete tasks specific to their position.
