How to tune quake 3 ping

So, when someone's playing Q3 on my q3 server, and there is at least 2 another players or some bots, he has high ping.
I use linuxq3apoint 1.32c, I used to use ioquake 3 1.34, but there was even worse ping. I don't get, why...
Well, but I'm really sure, that the problem ain't in PC or connection.
Do you have some tips, how to tune it? And I'm not gonna use mods or something...

What's your upstream bandwidth like?

if memory servers me correctly
server settings
sv_fps 20
seta sv_maxRate "10000" for good connection .. 8000 or lower for poor server connection

tell your players to set
snaps 20
com_maxfps 90 ""never 0 online""
rate 10000
game admins http://gameadmins.com/modules.php?name= ... e&artid=35 is a good resource for quake3 server settings

maxRate 10000 is shit. Unless you're running on DSL with 768K up and want to have 12 people on your server there's no point.

ideal client settings are:

rate 25000
maxpackets 125
snaps 40

depending on which version of the q3 exe you are running snaps may not matter on the client and is defined by sv_fps. i know challenge q3 exe this is the case, not sure about ioquake. best bet as to not affect all players is to limit the number of player slots.

you guys always used to run the q3w server that way, or maybe clanservers were so cheap that wouldn't allow the extra 3KB/sec per player that would actually make it a decent server.

that and enabling pmove but that was definitely raw and doomer. don't know how many times i tried to get them to disable that broken piece of shit.
