why does windows 7 tell me google chrome has stopped working

when it's clearly working fine, I can close the "has stopped working" dialogue and continue browsing, but it's annoying. Happens about every ten minutes.

sounds suspicious , like perhaps another program is trying to start chrome but is blocked.

Or maybe it actually stopped working but then recovered.

i think it's the beginnings of one of the hdds in my raid array going tits up. FFFFUUUU Maxtor.
