And man the models suck, can't even tell what I'm looking at. Any model replacements to recommend? :id:

Yeah, best to stay away from old shit you have fond memories of.
Reliving them will usually disappoint.

Especially the case with video games, I suppose. Other media like movies, books and music tend to retain their appeal, because they're less subjected to technological advancement.

It's funny because it's true.

And don't give me the old "it's all about the gameplay" crap. Graphics *do* matter in enjoying games.

There is (or used to be) a high-poly model pack but it's either dead or my Google-fu is weak.

I replay Quake and Quake 2 fairly often. Several older games in fact. I do use updated graphic mods but I can play them with the original without it bothering me.

I replay Quake and Quake 2 with original graphics... "updated" graphics don't look any better to me and it just seems to subtract a certain feel from the game that makes it what it is.

Here's something to think about Plan B - a game with shitty graphics can be saved with brilliant gameplay mechanics. However, a game with shitty gameplay can't be saved by making it look shiny.

I think Memphis sums it up nicely.

I didn't play Quake 1 too long ago and I think the graphics are still alright. Textures are low res, models are chunky but it's still amazing fun to run through and blow things up.

I think games from the Quake era and up are still quite playable on modern hardware, but older games like Doom start to become too dated. Shooting at sprites with pixels on my 24" monitor the size of my thumb distracts from the gameplay.

I play quakeworld all the time...and it is still the best damn DM game ever created (so fuck u).

My advice is to get one of the mod packages like fuhquake/ezquake... you can usually get a whole kit in one download that installs all the upgraded textures, models, and shit. You can play quake SP with it as well. Check the ID Legends forum for the sticky thread with a buttload of links for all this.

A modified frogbot is usually included...and they will hand you your ass on higher difficulties in TDM.

Dunno, I played the first episode of Quake 1 on my Nintendo DS not too long ago and I loved it. Playing with the stylus worked pretty well in fact. It was just that jumping was rather fiddly, but strictly speaking not entirely necessary.

Totally agree, and never said otherwise.
"Graphics *do* matter in enjoying games," is what I said. As in enhance the immersive experience.
Not "If the graphics are dated, the game is crap".

My only point is, don't look back.
We played quake in 1996, it was awesome then, the end. You're not going to get the same experience when you play it now, you will be disappointed.
That's the entire issue the OP has with it, no?
We've been "spoiled" to expect a new level of graphical fidelity.

I played through all episodes of DOOM1 & 2 not long ago and loved every bit of it. I had a mod for higher resolution and mouse supprot but otherwise original. There are still very few games that play like it.

I played thought the first episode of Q1 about a month back, after not playing it for years (in any form, let alone the single player).

Remembered nearly 100% of the secrets on all the levels :D

Didn't we all use shit quality textures and the likes for Q3 anyway? I couldn't see a thing with the default graphics.

Any kind of competitive game I turn the graphics on the lowest setting and try to maximise visibility.
