Quake 3 Version Switching Made Easy

Post by 666sparky666 »

Things needed for this Quake 3 CD, All quake point releases, 7zip, winzip, or even winrar .etc

First If you already have quake installed with all the point release from 1.16n to 1.32 notice not 1.16n to 1.32c because 1.32c is its own quake3.exe, so make a back up copy of the quake3.exe file and name the zip file fullprexe = full point release quake3exe.zip/rar/7zip what ever your using to zip files with just remember what it was named. And leave the zip file in the Quake 3 Directory folder.

Second Download All the point release from Id Software and QuakeUnity
1. ftp://ftp.idsoftware.com/idstuff/quake3/win32/old/ 1.16n to 1.31
2. ftp://ftp.idsoftware.com/idstuff/quake3/win32/1.32
3. http://www.quakeunity.com/file=23641.32c Final point release(keep zipped by it's self it's a new quake3.exe file. so you wanna make a copy of it to go back to 1.32c so name it 1.32cq3exe.zip)

And copy all of them to your quake 3 directory for safe keeping.

Third you need a quake 3 CD and pop it in to your CD player don't reinstall it just hit exit if it try's to and right-click your CD drive where quake 3 CD is and choose explorer.
Now you should be looking at the contents of the CD so look for the quake 3 folder and double click it and copy the quake3.exe file off the CD and zip it also and name it firstisexe.zip = first install quake3.exe.

Forth go into your quake 3 directory C:\Program Files\Quake III Arena\, even easier if you right click the quake 3 icon on your desktop and choose properties and then click find target which will take you directly to your quake 3 directory.

Recap You should have all the copied the quake3.exe in your quake 3 directory ans zipped it under a name, also have copied from the quake 3 CD the quake3.exe file and zipped it under a name, you should have already downloaded all the point release 1.16n to 1.32(zip 1.32c and leave it zipped and just extract it when you want to return the game to the final point release).

Warning 1.16n will not manually start quake 3 up so after you use 1.16n go in and delete the quake3.exe. I used a game browser to play with version 1.16n which worked perfectly.

Five now delete your quake3.exe file and and extract or copy the firstisexe.zip = first install quake3.exe (from the quake cd ) into your C:\Program Files\Quake III Arena\ and and install 1.16n and start up the game with a game browser wait for quake 3 server to load and hit the ~ symbol to bring down the console and it will say Version q3 1.16n = your now running version 1.16n so exit out of the game and go back into your C:\Program Files\Quake III Arena\ and zip the quake3.exe file and name it q31.16n.zip. So that was easy now you wanna go to 1.30 point release simple make sure you already zipped 1.16n and delete the quake3.exe again and extract the copy from firstisexe.zip = first install quake3.exe and install 1.30 point release and like above start up quake 3 and at the menu screen hit the ~ symbol and it should say q3 version 1.30 now exit out of quake and again go into your C:\Program Files\Quake III Arena\ and zip the quake3.exe and name it q31.30.zip you can do the same steps for all the other point releases. This all worked on Windows Xp Professional 32bit. Now you have should have zips of 1.16n, 1.30, 1.31, and 1.32c so you can just delete your quake 3 exe and choose to extracted from the zip folders which version you wanna play on.

Please Test this on Windows Xp/Vista/Win7 32bit/64bit Versions and see if it helps. As far as Dr. Watson Quake 3 point release Version Switcher Can't find and Old Farts Xtreme Gaming Quake 3 version Switcher v2.05 to v2.07 Not Working. I know a lot of you are all coming back to quake on new OS's so if this works start fragging asap

Typed all of this while drunk ( I should run for Congress >:D ) Now back to some more noghost(1.16n) and efreeze(.1.31) versions Peace

Thanks for reading my post and for those who are still having problems with the opengl32 not installing because you have a newer video card just go into your quake 3 config and change r_mode to 4 and change custom width and custom height to fit your screen worked for me perfectly for me. Have fun fragging. Quake 3 For Life!!!

Why didn't you just ask. I'm sure a lot of people still have it and would gladly upload it.
