Solitude, Maverick Summer Comp Submission Entry.

Post by Hipshot »

This is my submission entry to the Summer Comp over at Maverick Servers.

It's a 1v1 level, with the same kind of vertical profile that Crescent had.

Because of different reasons, I won't be able to fix any bugs or extra features in this level now, I'm just too tired to write all text again, so I'll just give you a link to it: http://maverickservers.com/forums/viewt ... 551#p18551 (I'll write some proper text when I slept forever)

Edit: I should add, that any suggestions or whatever is very welcome, but I won't fix it for this version, but I will return later.

And a link to download the level =) http://www.zfight.com/misc/files/q3/sol ... erick2.zip ~15MB

Looks great just by judging from the screenshots, also: good to see some old ideas or yours implemented here. Downloading and soon testing!
EDIT: For me that map has that certain Hipshot-feeling, not many authors reach that level of "recognizability" in their projects.

Ambient sound is quite nice. Water looks grand. Love the floating "dust" particles. Cohesive color scheme and theme. Lovely outside-of-window view. Beautiful textures. Great use of plants and atmospheric lighting. Layout seems solid enough. Polish it just a little bit (problems stated in readme) and it will be finished. Well done.

Excellent, this is high level map making =)

Love the placement of red armor and everything else about this map. Couldn't find any green armor though :p

Only thing I could think of: it's a very tight map and lacks a big room/open spaces that every great (that I can think of) 1v1 map have.

Thanks guys, I wish there was more time.

I will be leaving now and won't be back with a mappable Q3 for over a week, so I hope there's no serious errors here...

Actually there is one: if you somehow fall into the small water pool (the left water pool) in front of the teleporter that takes you up to the LG you are not able to get out anymore and either have to kill yourself or use rj or pj.

The "additional ad" is great, had to laugh pretty loud, zfight for life! :D
Plus the entire map is beautiful and has some very interesting kind of connectivity - strolled around for 15 minutes before I even loaded the first bot.
One more suggestion: swap the RG and the RG ammo - somehow it was strange that you have "hid" the ammo better than the weapon itself. Could be funny to spot the ammo pack but not the RG at first and thus having the weapon as a reward for being a little more attentive than others just rushing through your map.
Most of the bot action takes place on the big curved staircase but I guess that ok, bots falling into the water get out of there pretty well (unless you battle them on nightmare, swimming there is a certain death sentence).
Finally, congrats on the idea of combining water and fog this is ingenious! Don't know if you're the first one to do this but it looks fucking stunning.

EDIT:corrected 2 spelling mistakes
EDIT2: Added "Finally...stunning"

Any reason the GL was left out? I've always liked that you've never felt the need to omit any weapons on your maps.

Also wanted to mention... I've been getting some of my friends to try Quake 3 recently, and your maps are among the most popular on my server. :)

No, that was fixed before I left, the version up _should_ be the fixd one. If you download again. Unless I forgott to upload it...

Don't swap the RG and RG ammo! Experienced duellers use a duouble jump on for example ZTN (bloodlust, popular duel map) which is a jump through a teleporter and then another jump to get to the red armor. The thing is, it works on your map aswell! Don't know if it was intentional, but you should keep it that way.

@Hipshot: Yeah, you had uploaded the wrong version. ;) This one (finalized some 3 hours later) works!

An awesome release Hipshot, I think you've perfected the "algae water" effect. Good luck in the competition!

Another map that looks great! Maybe a bit tight in a few places.

The only thing I don't like are the red JPs, they don't really fit in there imo (same for the sponsor logos).

Yeah the ads are somewhat annoying. Maybe consider making another ad-free version after the competition?
One last thing that should be changed: if you look at your second screenshot: see the lowest light above the door frame? You can stand on that door frame and camp there if you do it cleverly.

I feel that the blood-red color goes well into the palette of the map, that's why I use it.

And, yea, the ads, I don't really like them either. But with all respect to Maverick and his work at the competition, I won't release an ad free version in a while, perhaps in a few months. I don't think any one of the contenders should...

Edit: Monaster, that fog thing, not really something I came up with. Some of Ids liquids uses this, many other people too. However, I'm surprised that not more people use fog in their water, espec if it's deep enough to go below the surface.

bliccer,

I must admit I have not been able to find links to 'final' screenshots etc for all the maps (eg city3dm5, stor3toruney9 and others).
