I have 500mb as well, I've never gone over. I download the odd application here and there. However, I also disable image downloads in the browser (unless I need/want to see it specifically) since most images on pages are just ads or useless shit.

well you only went over once, and not by much ?, during a 6 month period... Im with o2 in the UK and i dont think ive ever had a grilling for exceeding my allowance

unless they start charging your ass for every MB over?.... Just sounds like youll be paying twice the amount when you may only go over the limit twice a year ? (working on UK packages, think we only offer 500mb and 1gb ?)
