Best way to make GD an active forum again
Best way to make GD an active forum again
Combine all the other bullshit forums that get like 3 posts a day into GD. So you have something like 3 forums here: GD, The Void and Announcements... or something along those lines - I'm sure you homos catch my drift.
Thoughts?
Thoughts?
Thick, solid and tight in all the right places.
Re: Best way to make GD an active forum again
That actually may not be a bad idea. Except I think LEM should stay as well. I don't think it would mix well with GD.
Re: Best way to make GD an active forum again
yes, LEM and programming should be kept seperate, they have quite the following still.
q3nub disc could be merged with GD, tho we'd have to be careful not to scare away genuine new posters with genuine nub questions.
i gots my eye on u, lawl

Re: Best way to make GD an active forum again
Yeah, that's the fly in the ointment. The total rejection of anyone new by the GD regulars. Just defeats the idea right off the bat. If that were to be the case, then might as well leave it as it is.
Re: Best way to make GD an active forum again
LawL's campaign to become a fagmin starts here
Re: Best way to make GD an active forum again
Don't think he'd make a bad one, tbh.
And good idea.

The void? no
Re: Best way to make GD an active forum again
Probably feeding the troll here, but the boards are just fine the way they are.
Sure there are some boards that don't get a lot of traffic, like ETQW, Q4, id legends and mac, but I don't see how the site would benefit from incorporating them into gd.
Indeed, the incidental noob with a valid question would just get flamed and ran off.
This site has persevered in roughly its current form for 11 years now, and I really don't see the need to fix something that isn't broken.

Re: Best way to make GD an active forum again
Not an entirely bad idea.
Newb bashing/trolling could be mitigated by progressive bannage (first offense is a day ban, then two days, a week, etc.), coupled with aggressive policing of GD.
The ban hammer is bound to generate lots of Inter-drama, though.

Re: Best way to make GD an active forum again
Any way about it, I don't think it's going to generate much more traffic than usual. And more aggressive policing will just make certain people bitch and give them a new crusade to launch. I'm starting to think it should just stay as it is.

on a related note, the new improved (and photographically talented) sys0p should on no account be banned due to ancient fagmin e-grudges :hardstare:

Gee I don't know Duminic, maybe the people who enjoy posting here? Perhaps after 10 years, 43000 posts and being a mod it hasn't dawned on you that you're one of them.Doombrain wrote:christ, who cares about shit like this?

I'm not trolling. A board with fuck all traffic may not be "broken", but it is boring as all hell.Plan B wrote:Probably feeding the troll here, but the boards are just fine the way they are.

This x 10000. Dark Metal has already effectively used that exact type of progressive bannage to stop excessive trolling/flaming in GD. Couple that with appointing mods who actually give a shit and post or check the boards more than once a month and it's a small problem easily solved. And if it generates inter-drama as you suggested, then all the better.^misantropia^ wrote:Not an entirely bad idea.

Re: Best way to make GD an active forum again
Merging forums isn't going to do anything if there is still the same number of people posting, it's not going to attract new people. You may just have a greater frequency of posts made on a unified sub-forum but with the exact same people posting.
The biggest change we can do is to acquire another domain name, one less specific to Quake 3 and say, more id Software related or gaming in general. fpsworld.com, idgamers.com, etc. and design a new optional forum skin. Then hope people join when interested in future stuff like Brink or Rage.
We'll also have to tailor more to the broader gaming community with written resources for specific games, challenges, contests, etc. If you Google search for top Quake Live community websites, Q3W is not listed anywhere. Instead, you get Quake-Live.tv, ESReality.com, Holysh1t.net and QuakeUnity.com. That requires a sizable investment of time and energy, I'm not sure if anyone here is able to do that anymore.

Re: Best way to make GD an active forum again
That's the intention, hence the thread title. And when there are more posts in the main forum it generates more posts from the regulars, so you end up with more activity than just a combined post tally from multiple forums.obsidian wrote:You may just have a greater frequency of posts made on a unified sub-forum but with the exact same people posting.
This isn't a thread suggesting a way to attract n00bs. That's not going to happen.

Re: Best way to make GD an active forum again
Or it could just make more threads with only 1 or 2 posts that get ignored by most.

Doesn't work like that Randy.
