CPU Cooler

Post by ^Ghost »

im thinking about buying a new cpu cooler so i can overclock my processor, im looking for something to easily install without having to take out my mobo completely, from the looks of my case it seems like i can just do it without taking it out, however if it comes down to it i will have no choice to take it out. among hours of research this was the best one i could find with a reasonable price .... http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.a ... 6835181010

which comes to my next question... has any1 ever cleaned thermal paste off their cpu? im honestly really afraid to do it, i dont wanna fuck up my processor considering my warranty on it is gone. whats the most effective way of doing it, i saw many utube "how to's" but was wondering if any1 here could give me some input.

some specs:
intel i7 920
asus p6t v2 deluxe motherboard

This is the one I have, though Newegg doesn't carry the exact same one anymore (they have a 92mm fan version):

Cleaning thermal paste really isn't hard. Just ground yourself, keep the place dust free and use a lint-free cloth with some rubbing alcohol.

That said, the stock Intel i7 cooler is pretty decent and will handle some mild overclocking.

Arctic Cooling Freezer 7 Pro
http://ncix.com/products/?sku=42379&vpn ... %20Cooling

i7 930 overclocked to 3.8GHz (190x20), running low 40s idle, low 60s under high load with Prime95.

Stock i7 coolers are terrible unless your mild overclock is 400MHz or less.

well i was going to buy it from microcenter, i have one near my house and i was ther the other day and they have plenty in stock of the 120mm.

so my last question is what do you guys think about purchasint high end thermal paste like arctic silver is it worth the extra hassel or should i just stick with what comes with the cooler?

If you're getting the Noctua, it already comes with a good supply of Noctua thermal compound - it's quality stuff on par with Arctic Silver, so you shouldn't need to buy anything else.

Just apply a small amount and spread it around with a piece of plastic (I found that a piece of plastic that I cut off from a blister pack of something I bought works well). A very thin layer of thermal compound over the surface of the processor is all you need, too much and it will actually insulate.

lol when i went to buy a new case fan for my old pc (it was a noctua fan, really good fan just fuckin expensive for a case fan), i ended up buyin an i7, new mobo, ram, and a new case.

but anyway back to the topic, i think im just gonna stick with the stock thermal paste, i dont feel like putting in the extra work for a slight decrease in temperature

the first cooler i was looking at was the cooler master v6gt, but that thing is freakin HUGE. i know it will fit, but i dont want to deal with something that huge... besides installation looked like a pain in the ass, id rather go with something simple, less chance of me messing something up lol.

sorry obsidian, i just re-read ur post i didnt realize u were talking about a different cpu cooler.

off topic question... i did a minor overclock with my stock cooler as a test... and since i have an asus mobo with the epu-6 engine.. all my fans run at max speed constantly. is there anyway around that, or will it be that way when i do end up overclocking it.

Check the BIOS. Your fans are probably set to spin at full speed past a certain temperature threshold.
