Re: Deux Ex. HR new gameplay trailer
Game feels like it's surrounded by an aura of "game-changing-experience" to me.
If nothing else, the way they market the game is very well thought out, with their carefully released trailers and screenshots.
I just hope the game delivers in gameplay as much as it does in hype.

Re: Deux Ex. HR new gameplay trailer
I just hope its better than the second and comes even CLOSE to the first, because if it does, its GOTY material for sure.
Re: Deux Ex. HR new gameplay trailer
Thing I liked about Deux Ex was the perfect blend of present and future. That trailer bares absolutely no relation to anything real.
I'm looking at this as just another FPS that could be cool. Expecting it to be as ground breaking as the original is going to leave too much room for disappointment.
Here's hoping they haven't horribly simplified the story like they do in most modern FPS games..

Re: Deux Ex. HR new gameplay trailer
wow, want!
Re: Deux Ex. HR new gameplay trailer
lame, they should have made it 3rd person like mass effect.
Re: Deux Ex. HR new gameplay trailer
Yup, they should totally have made it like the first ga... Wait, what?shaft wrote:lame, they should have made it 3rd person like mass effect.
Re: Deux Ex. HR new gameplay trailer
Main problems, besides the third person crap and the regen health:
Object highlighting. What the fuck is all this about? It basically gives away all the shortcuts/hidden areas, which we actually had to work towards discovering in DX1. Haha, I imagine being in Hong Kong in DX1 and getting a massive gold highlight around Jocks apartment - something I didn't discover until my third playthough originally. It's like playing DX in Batmans Detective Mode and it is fucking weak in my opinion.
The ammo counter in the middle of the screen. Jesus christ, talk about garish. What is wrong with a traditional HUD, with the ammo in the bottom corner? It just looks plain retarded and is bound to obstruct enemies. I hope that gets fixed in the final game.
It all gives off a MGS-type vibe, which isn't a bad thing usually, but I don't think that kind of look belongs in a DX universe. Compare Liberty Island and Battery Park from the original with what was in the trailer and they literally look worlds apart. I realise they want to put their own stamp on this, but by doing so, they're going further away from the original imo. Hopefully theres lots of grotty, run-down slums to explore in the final game though. I always prefered the grimey urban environments to the hi-tech ones.
Besides that, everything else looks quite spiffy... definitely a much better job than anyone could have expected them to do tbh.

"Any security features I should be worried about?"
"Nothing too taxing, I'd expect"
That's because they're all glowing bright fucking orange.

Re: Deux Ex. HR new gameplay trailer
it shouldn't be difficult for them to have some kind of hardcore mode where they turn the glowing off.

Re: Deux Ex. HR new gameplay trailer
its the future, the hud overlay is fitting in with that, think gits style. the trick will be in the hacking etc i hope
Re: Deux Ex. HR new gameplay trailer
There is such a feature apparently, but whether it includes turning off object highlighting is anyones guess.phantasmagoria wrote:it shouldn't be difficult for them to have some kind of hardcore mode where they turn the glowing off.
Really, stop noobing up the fucking game, Eidos. This isn't prince of persia and we don't need you holding our hand all the way though.
Re: Deux Ex. HR new gameplay trailer
Gotta agree on that, I love finding shit I didn't even know was there, not seeing it from half a mile away
Why does a grate need to glow in the dark anyway, it should be obvious I can interact with it...

Re: Deux Ex. HR new gameplay trailer
They've been dumbing down games with "LOOKIT ME!" highlights/indicators for years. GRAW wasn't the first, but it was the one that set the whole "point out everything with a graphic especially enemies" approach to making games for stupid people. Even the latest Assassin's Creed does this more than the older versions.
What the fuck did you expect? To make every game for the hardcore gamer only?

Re: Deux Ex. HR new gameplay trailer
No, but they already have enough games for casual gamers, certainly not enough for hardcore gamers. How about making a sequel to a game that originally required a lot of observation, problem solving and trial and error for hardcore gamers actually for hardcore games instead of mouthbreathing 12-year-old noncontributing zeros who need someone to hold their hand when doing something as simple as taking a shit?
Game developers need to look at their title and decide who their target audience is. Deus Ex is not supposed to be fun for stupid people. It's fun for people with a reasonable amount of brain cells.

Re: Deux Ex. HR new gameplay trailer
While I completely agree with you, there's the fact that hardcore gamers are less than 5% of a game's total potential audience and those casual retards that you and I speak off will make or break a production (or any chance of a sequel). No studio in the world would make money off a hardcore-only release...and money dictates what games devs make/publishers green-light.obsidian wrote:No, but they already have enough games for casual gamers, certainly not enough for hardcore gamers. It's usually not the devs that make the decisions to dumb down games...it's the publisher who demands that their target audience is "as large as possible" and devs design games with that in mind.obsidian wrote:Game developers need to look at their title and decide who their target audience is. Don't think for one second that devs don't want to stop making sequel after sequel of mindless, derivative shit and instead make innovative, intelligent games that force people to use their grey matter. But they have to pay the bills somehow and bending over and taking it in the ass from publishers, consumers and Wal-Mart to make "mass market" games - with the highest priority being profits - is what actually happens.
I've said it countless times: I blame the consumer. If you don't want easy-as-piss games or games that are full of bugs, then stop buying them.
Re: Deux Ex. HR new gameplay trailer
more studios need to be setup by old school gamers who are not out to make cash, but do what they love. with digital distribution etc now a viable method, these fucking publishers need to gtfo and stop ruining games blarg.
and blaming the consumer is a bit odd really. stop buying games? but its their hobby... what else are they gonna do? get a real life? go outside? sheeeeet

Re: Deux Ex. HR new gameplay trailer
The thing is, all I see from the new generation of games is things being taken away and nothing added. The line between "streamlining" and "dumbing down" gets thinner with every release. Deus Ex is a 10 year old game for gods sake, yet is still seen as some anomoly in gaming. Instead of taking a working formula and making things even bigger/better/more involved, pretty much every game since has taken more and more control away from the player.
Publishers do want their games to reach more people, but Deus Ex by its very name isn't a casual game. In fact, Eidos Montreal even said that they don't want casual gamers (and by this, he means people who don't play often, or just play stuff like wii sports, etc..) involved in the testing phase for DX:HR, as it isn't a game suited for them.
Publishers (and subsequently developers) need to stop treating gamers like retards and quit assuming that we're all too stupid to want gameworlds that require more interaction than pressing X when the prompt says so. Actually start giving more control to the player and assume he is intelligent enough to want to work things out on his own. With a game like Deus Ex, they have over a million or so people who want exactly that anyway, so instead of catering for the lowest common denominator, try and build upon this and change this increasingly shitty industry for the better.
Demon's Souls is about the most hardcore, uncasual game you can play this generation and was exclusive to one format. It treated players with respect, introduced innovative features such as the MP and actually gave them a challenge. Low and behold, it is seen as one of the best games on the system and sold shitloads. Its a shame it takes a small publisher like Atlus to get it right, whereas the big publishers just insist on making the same mistakes, time and time again.

You [and other gamers like you] are in the minority though. That's not where the money is. IMO GKY's argument carries weight because he's in the industry [also possibly because he's fat], it's pretty much spot on. Free market at work here folks.brisk wrote:Publishers (and subsequently developers) need to stop treating gamers like retards and quit assuming that we're all too stupid to want gameworlds that require more interaction than pressing X when the prompt says so.

Re: Deux Ex. HR new gameplay trailer
Another interesting facet to this debate is that it's typically Western developers that are responsible for dumbing content down.
This has resulted in the Japanese publishers thinking that they're failing. They're not really, they're just not selling as much as Western games designed by marketing departments for maximum market saturation. They're probably selling as many games as they always have, but those figures just can't compare to the ridiculous ones touted by Western annual franchises.
The one exception being Nintendo and the Wii, plus Mario games, which dwarf the sales of ANY other game, but even there, indications are that Nintendo are on the downward slope of the bell curve.
Overall, I tend to agree with GKY here.
While the public show a voracious appetite for grey, recycled dross, Bobby Kotick and his peers are more than willing to keep shovelling it down their gullets.
The most exciting stuff in gaming going on right now is coming from the indies. I think that's where salvation lies.
To that end, I think it's crucial that indies become more protective of the IPs they develop. Too many old IPs get revived in completely inappropriate ways these days, as the business men who bought them try to shoe-horn them into whichever genre is currently most popular.
