I've never quite understood why translation machines translate every word literally instead of using groups of common words and phrases and translating those. So something like "the general idea" would keep its meaning rather than suddenly referring to a military person of high rank, making the whole thing incomprehensible instantly. Seems to me like there'd be a lot less variables to deal with.

Common phrases and expressions are mostly shared across related languages anyway, so it shouldn't even be that much of a monumental task to set up. I think.

I would think you're underestimating the complexity of translating to be honest.
If it was that easy, I'm sure the wizards at Google would've come up with such a system ages ago.
