actually, they already did.
translate.google.com now reads context, and even has a "submit a better translation for this" function with each result.

it's impressive

Ah, but i'm not saying it'll be easier to realize than the current system, only much more accurate. And that it's possibly a slightly less daunting task than it seems at first glance, because there's a lot of similarities in languages, especially in related ones.

It'll certainly be harder to create something like this to be fair, as it's a completely human task to create such a database instead of simply using an existing dictionary database (which i'm guessing takes a minimal amount of programming - find word A in database B, give result).

Instead the database would have more complete and complex expressions and common word groups in the primary language, and compare their meaning to expressions that mean roughly the same in the secondary language... you'd need an impressively clever bit of programming that correctly guesses what you're trying to say as well.

LET ME DREAM

Ah see, they still haven't quite fixed the problem :)
But the ability to send in correcter translations should make this more accurate as time goes by... cool.

oh noes, out of the millions of possible sentences you managed to find one that doesnt quite work.
cleary, the translation engine is a failure.

I havent seen any other translator that managed to do this right; http://translate.google.com/#auto|en|da ... %20drukken

Ah, i've thought of a metaphore: picture the Latin alphabet and the Chinese alphabet.

The amount of different words than can be made with the characters is almost unlimited, but only some characters followed by specific others actually mean something. It's the same thing with words, there's an mindboggling amount of words, but only in a certain order do they mean something. This means that the more complex the language gets, the less variables you actually have to deal with!*

*i might be completely wrong, not thought it through very well yet

Also yeah... after playing around with that google thing, i'm impressed

lol, well, it was the second translation I tried. Ryoki's "the general idea" was the first (which correctly translates to "het algemene idee", but that could be luck rather than context awareness)
