I wonder if Bethesda are handling these kinds of marketing trailers now. id Software never seemed really good at promoting their own games outside of channels that only interests nerds and geeks.

This trailer has a proper cinematic feel to it. Jolly good I say.

All those rage trailers remind me of fallout 3 and borderlands, both games that interested me for a bit and then rapidly became boring somehow :tear:

I still don't know about this game. Some things sound good, some things do not tickle me in the right spots...

Same here; for me it was because of the heavy rpg-element (bit less with borderlands).
I know that's probably what made those games for many people, but I just didn't feel it.

I don't think rage is that heavy on the rpg, though;
Not exactly a linear shooter a la quake or doom, but probably a bit more free-roamy, with racing - and light rpg elements thrown in.

Trailer looks sweet, and especially promising because I think it's all engine rendered and not pre-rendered.
Just hope it won't be the engine showcase I fear crysis 2 to be.

There's a quote in that trailer that tells you everything you need to know.

"The game is easy-kill or be killed".

It'll be just another mindless shooter. id don't make any other kind of game and they never have.

Their last decent single player game was released in 1996.

It's a genre that's quickly becoming extinct. Being a mindless shooter doesn't mean the game is boring. And when it comes to making mindless shooters, id Software is still one of the top dogs in the industry.
These days developers care too much for RPG stats and other nonsense like that. Give me a shotgun that gives a big fat BANG and a thumping machine gun and I'm ready to go. Instant gratification.

Serious Sam is three times the mindless shooter Doom3 was. Or Q4 for that matter.

and a better game, too.

I don't think the FPS is anywhere near done at this point, there's plenty of scope left for deep, complex storylines and environments. "Instant gratification" is marketing-speak for "shallow".

Absolutely. I finished Serious Sam. It was brilliant entertainment from start to finish, because it never tried to be anything it wasn't.

With Doom 3, I remember getting about 5 levels in and then just level-skipping all the way to the end.

The FPS game will always be around for people who like there games fast paced and relatively skilled. There is also enough space in the Market for mindless shooters (Serious Sam) on rail shooters with a cinematic style (CoD) and also "intelligent" shooters (Deus Ex)

When all is said and done, all games are sectioned off into a little sub genre and people have had their say a simple fact will remain; a FPS games needs to be fun and needs to look nice. Get these 2 things correct and you have a winner in your mits.

It's possible to split the difference with a great story on single player, and mindless shooter with multiplayer. It can be done.

Absolutely. L4D is also a mindless shooter, but it's awesome. Instant gratification doesn't equal shallow. Playing 20 mins of L4D or Gears or Quake is fun. Games with deeper story lines often require more extensive gaming sessions to really get into it again.

No I haven't :-(
But seriously, when I say extreme difficulty usually ends in failure I get the response that as,long as you cuddle up in corners, it's easy enough and when I say that it is a mindless shooter, suddenly tactics and strategy are paramount to survival. Which one is it?

cuddling in a corner is still a tactic, the team has to identify a defensible spot, move there and take up a line of fire each to hold off incomers. grenades are useless and wasted unless used at the right time, when to heal etc.. there's where, when and how factors and although they become second nature, it's not mindless target aquisition and firing with whatever, however-u-like ala Serious Sam and CoD.
by that logic Serious Sam on Serious difficulty is anything but a mindless shooter. Much like L4D, you're constantly orientating where the enemies are and prioritizing them. Coupled with the limited ammo you're given you are literally counting the shots fired, switching weapons per enemy and enemy group.
simple does not mean easy is basically the moral of the story

indeed. hence the "by that logic"-prelude.
