made a video

Post by redfella »

Video: http://www.vimeo.com/20901360

Well, I guess its about that time of year again... when I drop into these forums... write a post or two... then vanish again. So this time, I made a little video showing some of the q3 maps that I made, back in the day. I had a lot of fun making this video, and it brought back a lot of good memories from that amazing, creative period when all I (we) did was map day and night. Those were some awesome times, for sure.

I made this video mostly for the sake of just making something awesome, but also for my portfolio, in the hopes of getting a production internship in the industry. Why would I want a production job and not a level design job? -Well, as much as I love level design, I've never wanted to do it professionally. I much prefer it as a hobby. I am much better suited to a production/management role.

On a completely different note.... I really enjoyed making this video. So much so that would consider making another to showcase the work of a fellow mapper(s), if the conditions were right. -Let me know if anyone is interested.

Thanks a million, guys, for the memories, good times and amazing worlds that we all helped create... together.

I recognize one or two of those... mostly the first one. I don't remember where I've gotten most of my favorite maps, so, when I lost most of my Q3A stuff, (in a computer meltdown last year) I've had to pick em up randomly. Do you have any of these available for DL? If so... where plz?

Video is sweet but will most likely be deleted soon because vimeo doesn't allow gaming-related videos. They also deleted my Quake2World videos even though I explained in the comments that this is a free indie game project I'm working on, not just a video of someone playing a random map of some game and uploading it to the internet because he's bored or something. :(

I can only tell what happened to me. They deleted all q2w level design videos without warning and with the message "No gaming videos allowed" and linked the page I linked in my last post. Maybe you're lucky and they don't spot yours or they have decided to handle their policy less strict since that happened.

Or maybe the video was posted before that policy was adopted. EH 3 was posted 3 years ago.

I know it was just a just-for-fun production, but you could've made a better job by just using q3mme (like DaEngineer did). His map presentations are great. Despite this, I really like the shots of the maps. They all look very well done.

For a really good presentation of own work watch this movie:
Rusher Production
Everything's selfmade by Rusher, Music, Maps, Video, 3d. Great vid.

i much more enjoyed the presentation when you were moving/flying through the levels. it brought a atmosphere and a completeness to the levels that wasn't nearly so apparent as the still shots. the still shots were cool, but they kind went on for a long time.

if you are looking for production/management roles, and want to use this as part of a portfolio, then i would suggest seeing what happens if you present each map in order instead of switching it up and jumping around. you could, for example, start with stills of a map, and then fly around it, and then show the next map. adding some after effects and titles and such could go a long way to upping the feeling of having made something complete.

it's late... i hope that makes sense...
