Sonic Mayhem: Noise and In-Game Music

Post by EmeraldTiger »

So I listened to "Audio Adrenaline", a music track which could not be found in Quake III (afaik) but was in the Sonic Mayhem: Noise soundtrack. It`s an awesome song and I really wish it was in the CD. I think the .mp3`s / .wav`s are available for download somewhere?

Anyways, would it be legal to use the Noise soundtracks for my maps? I mean I`m guessing it`s alright, since it`s by Sonic Mayhem (who made some of the in-game music), the music is freely available without having to buy the CD, etc. Also the map Antilogic which was used to promote the CD also has the soundtrack of the same name used for the map iirc. I could be wrong though, but I doubt it.

One torrent sites, sure. As far as I know, the tracks are not free. Otherwise there was no use of selling them for around 19 bucks. Where do you can get them for free if not illegaly?

Made for Quake does not equate to free. You're not even allowed to re-distribute the .wav tracks from inside of Quake 3's .pk3's, what makes you think it's alright for tracks off of a music CD?

I guess I misunderstood and thought it was free because I could listen to it on YouTube.

Yeah, most songs available on YouTube are put there illegally IIRC.

Even if the artist uploaded a music video on YouTube doesn't mean that it suddenly becomes public domain. It may mean just free to view on YouTube as promotional material, but you still are required to purchase the music for other uses.

Even when you purchase the music you can't use it in your Quake map. You can't rip the song and redistribute it.

If you want to get some new music track for the map, you can find a band who records such things for free or will be glad to let you use it. Also you could try to search for right track in one of the free online sounds databases. And ofc you can always try to make your own track ;).

Thanks for the replies.

Does anyone know of a good free synthesizer program, btw? (following ShadoW`s comment) Or any program to implement electronic sounds and then combine it with other sounds (drums, etc.)?

You're looking for a DAW (digital audio workstation). Im not too familiar with free DAWs to be honest, but I hear good things about Reaper, and that supports VSTs (synths and fx). http://www.reaper.fm/

If you want to be a bit more hardcore (and not download anything), check out http://burn-studios.audiotool.com/ (it is complicated if you don't know what you're doing, though).

btw Once you find a DAW you can find tons of synths at http://www.kvraudio.com/

I spent a good amount of time working with Reason from Propellerhead software... it's pretty difficult to learn all of the little widgets to where you can get a halfway decent soundtrack, especially if you don't have a midi keyboard. I'd recommend checking it out, anyway.

Sometimes you'll even find good music for your levels at the audioportal of Newgrounds.
