Shortly after the car crash death of Jackass Ryan Dunn, Roger Ebert tweeted, “He drank, he drove, 2 people died.”

“Friends don’t let jackasses drink and drive,” Ebert, an avid Twitter user, also tweeted, later clarifying that his use of the term “jackasses” was a nod to Dunn’s involvement in the film franchise.

The film critic later apologized that the tweet may have sounded cruel to some readers but staunchly defended his message that no one should be allowed to drink and drive.

The stuntman’s pals, and many fans, are furious. Friend and Jackass co-star Bam Margera responded to the film critic on Twitter, writing, “I just lost my best friend, I have been crying hysterical for a full day, and piece of s--t Roger Ebert has the gall to put in his two cents.”

“Millions of people are crying right now, shut your fat f---ing mouth!” read a follow-up tweet.

Gossip blogger Perez Hilton also weighed in, calling Ebert’s comments “insensitive.”

Alcohol has not been mentioned by police as a factor in Dunn’s crash in Pennsylvania on Monday, which also killed 30-year-old Zachary Hartwell, who had a small role in Margera’s 2009 film Minghags. A photo of Dunn, 34, drinking with friends was shared on Dunn’s Tumblr blog hours before the accident. The photo has been posted on Buzzfeed.

Ebert has expressed “regret” for the tweet. In his blog, Ebert offered his sympathies to the families of the two men who died in the crash and said, “I also regret that my tweet about the event was considered cruel. It was not intended as cruel. It was intended as true.”

He adds that he does not know for certain that Dunn had been drinking. “I don’t know what happened in this case, and I was probably too quick to tweet. That was unseemly.”

Ebert’s Facebook page was removed briefly Tuesday due to “malicious complaints from one or two jerks,” he tweeted. The page was restored after an hour and now features a lengthy string of comments debating Ebert’s tweet, with much name calling and many fans supporting the critic’s ‘Don’t drink and drive” message.

If Dunn died not doing something utterly stupid I wouldn't slag him. That's the honest truth. But he did die doing something stupid. I also still slag David Carradine for dying the way he did. Just like Dunn...he ruined any non-laughable legacy he was entitled to. These fools did it to themselves from their pure stupidity.

I truly feel sorry for Zachary Hartwell and his family and I feel sorry for Dunn's friends and family for their loss, but I don't feel sorry for Dunn.

Brisk - Turb and DarkViper were ace admins and made the place what it was today. CyriC too despite his bad wrap.

Everyone else - someone died; some people will be a bit upset and others will not give a shit. It happens everyday in life. The only difference here is tat this dude managed to entertain millions with mindless buffoonery (I am one of the entertained) and you didn't like it. Never mind - worse things will happen in your life so don't get too hung up about it.

Likely evidence is that he was a drink-sodden fool who deserved his fate, but I personally can't be 100% sure of that. He might've had some crushing news, or any other factor that may mitigate in this event.

If he drink, drove, and died, then fuck him. But there might be more to it, and people are way too quick to condemn.

I got a laugh or two out of some of the Jackass stunts. Others were too over the top disgusting for me and seemed to lack any creativity - seemed more like an excuse for guys to engage in homo-erotic behavior. I'd say for every 1 truly creative and funny stunt there were 10 that I couldn't watch (anything with real human shit - no can do for me but these guys have a fascination with the stuff).

Ryan Dunn was also hosting a new show on G4 - Proving Ground or something like that. Never saw it, wonder how the producers are feeling.

I'd think that someone could still mourn the death of a person that died in a completely retarded manner like Mr.Dunn here did, taking someone else's life in the process, (although that someone else was also guilty of making a purely moronic decision due to drinking, so if you have no sympathy for Dunn then you can't have your cake and eat it too by calling for people to feel more sorry for the drunk tool that got into the car with him). Someone died - people want to go through the completely human emotion of mourning that death, I don't see the big deal. Mourning doesn't seem to be mutually exclusive to agreeing that the death itself was completely the result of bad decision making.

On another note, alcohol and cigarettes still kills more than all illegal drugs combined and the feds have been raiding all the prescription marijuana dispensaries in town (even though medicinal use is legal here - docs can write prescriptions for patients, yet the act of selling to these patients is illegal). Makes good sense, right?

I think the fact that he posted pics of himself with his Jersey Shore looking buddies drinking that night is what is really leading everyone to conclude it was a basic old drunk driving incident, but there is not any evidence that he was in fact drunk yet. I agree that he probably was and I think one can separate condemnation of the act that led to the death from a bit of sympathy for the death itself.
