Have no doubt, BF3 will need Origin, even if you buy a retail copy.

As a person who already has an EA account for shit like NFS and Bad Company 2, I can already confirm this. They sent me an email last week saying that they are rebranding all their online services under Origin.

Or seek a copy that has nothing to do with the online portion. :)

Couple of interesting articles on Origin/Steam on Arse Technica:
What EA will lose if Battlefield 3 remains off Steam
Battlefield 3 is not coming to Steam, but EA has a real reason

..and an old/unrelated trailer for BC2:

You had to use an EA account to play BC2 online so why would this be different?

aye, old ea accounts are being migrated to origin - so you shouldn't have to change/add anything.

question for steam folks:
if you add a shortcut to steam for a non-steam game, does it show up on the friends list when you're playing that game?

It shows up as a none Steam game, and you can set the name so they can see, but they cant just click and join via the little box that pops up.

nice one ta. at least if people can see what game you're playing then they'll know they can start it up to join in.

..and what Ryoki said.

That was an incredibly annoying process. Fury convinced me to play BC2 and spent forever waiting for me to update/register/setup account shit, just to play the game for an hour or so.

EA/Dice did many things wrong with BC2, but in the end they did more things right. I still play nearly every day.

I got an email saying that my EA account was now an Origin account, but I haven't looked into it at all yet. Whatever.

Now that you've reminded me, I agree. Had to fuck around for ages and contact support before being able to play BF2 (somehow, they'd duplicated my BF1942 account instead of resetting the pw for it), then the same again with some add-on thing for BF2 and again with BC2 - edit: *and* that 50p SPECTACT skin pack thing.

I think EA are making a bad move with this. Their overall setup is downright incoherent and way too slow. Looking forward to eventually playing BF3, but seriously wondering if whatever infrastructure EA build around it is even going to work.

BC2 was a mess right after release. It took them months to fix the glitches, errors, and disconnections. Seems it's a bad idea to be an early adopter of EA software.

EA aren't the developers. DICE are.

Wouldn't go so far as to say it was a mess, it was pretty damn far from unplayable. In fact it was immediately highly awesome, despite the glaring errors. And they never fixed the voicecom, did they :/ Somehow i can't really blame DICE for it though. I'm sure they spent precious resources on that garbage bf heroes experiment which was most likely dreamed up by an EA overlord as a sort of weird marketing ploy... not sure though.

If it took you more than 30 seconds to create an EA account you're a retard. Also, with how many games you play I find it hard to believe you didn't already have one, so you're also a liar. the end.
