Video game trailers show the best of the action and lots of stuff blowing up. I don't recall trailers ever showing anything about the plot or dialog.

Example, here's the original HL2 trailer, who would have thought there would be an interesting plot and character dialog with, "Oh, I thought you were a cop."?

This game is gonna be fucking sweet. My only concern is that it won't be long enough. My hope is for the amount of gameplay to match that of Oblivion. But I have a feeling we may only get around 20 hours max out of this...

the issue i see with 20 hours of gameplay is that it would feel as if the rage universe and all the work that went into it, would be under utilized.

Hopefully, they will add alot of side quest deals, that might not required too much extra attention from the developing team, but would provide the player extra hours of at least mindless shooting and racing. As a player, you can either take it or leave it...worked great for other games like this.

So... apparently if you buy the game used some of the single player content will be locked out unless you shell out more money. Fucking gay, this shit pisses me off. Rage indeed. Guess who isn't getting this game, yet again.

It's really starting to piss me off, I refuse to buy games that implement this shit. I haven't bought an EA game in a very long time because of it and now because of bethesda I won't be getting this.

Speaking of Bethesda, I used to like those guys, now they're just money grubbing fucking cunts.

Throughout the world of Rage there are a few hidden hatches that lead to some underground sewers. These hatches are locked by default.

The game will come with a code that allows you to download the content for those sewers (or more likely, a patch that unlocks them).

If you buy the game second hand from someone that has already used the code, you're not going to get into the sewers unless you buy the content online.

Tim Willits said all this in an interview on Eurogamer. He also said that the sewers aren't tied into the storyline of the main game and actually are hidden as if they are secret areas. He reckons a good amount of people who even buy the game first hand will never get to see the sewers because they simply don't find them.

It's the most despicable practice in games today and i'm amazed that id of all developers are allowing it. Bethesda was always money grabbing twats with DLC, but this is a new low for them. What a shame.

Couldn't you just give someone the code if you are handing them game second hand? I imagine the code is reusable if you reinstall. Or is it somehow tied to some kind of user account?

Yeah I suspect that'll be the case. Oh well... I typically always buy my games, exceptions can be made...

Although its not something I would practice if I was a game developer, it's not something that bothers me...

This seems to be the future gaming today - don't deliver the whole game for the purchase price but offer it as a future unlock or as DLC.

Everything seems to be geared to the console players in the terms of the number of players, platform (no Linux), and the attention spam of todays youth.

What happend to the days of 32-64 player servers that are running custom maps that were downloaded for free?

At least Rage is supposed to ship with a editor (unlike Brink) so we can make some cool levels to play around in like the Hog-Jump maps of Quake Wars. :)

Looking forward to October 3.

I dunno, it depends how much content is hidden behind these sewers. If it's a whole new unrelated and decent story arc that's disconnected to the main plot then it could make sense, basically like traditional missions packs (think reckoning quake2 or blue shift for hl etc) but with portals to them ready built into the initial game then that's a decent idea and it makes sense. Say you buy an addon pack for £15 that's got five to ten hours gameplay behind it, it makes sense that it doesn't get included when you sell the first game.

If, however, it's just a small dungeon with a new gun or some shit in that you pay a couple of quid for then that's total bullshit. Fuck that noise.

I have a choice with Rage...360 or PC?

If I want maximum PC enjoyment I need a new GFX card...which is £200. Or I could just cope with the 360 pad and just pay £35 for the game...

Call me old fashioned, but if they've spent development time on a segment of the game prior to release, regardless of whether it is critical to the main story, then it should be included with the final thing when you buy it at retail. Consumers are effectively spending money on a game, with content lost unless you pay more for it. DX:HR is doing the same thing for that Augmented Edition with an entire mission to find Tong lost unless you buy it. Gash. RAGE's second-hand thing isn't as shit as Assassins Creed 2's completely missing chapters from the actual main game, but it's still bullshit imo.

It's not like old school expansion packs, because they're developed after the actual game ships and were usually far more significant than a sewer with extra stuff to shoot. Usually a hell of a lot more content than today's DLC too.

Shit like this leaves me with absolutely no qualms in hitting up usenet/torrents to get the "extra" content that should have been included with the retail/second-hand version anyway.

Comes down to two things, I guess.

- The old "playing an fps with a pad fucking sucks"
and
- It will look better on pc

I'm getting it for pc for exactly these 2 reasons.

Maybe you're comfortable with playing fps's with a pad.
But with a bunch of other quality titles on their way, a vid card upgrade seems worth it (if you're sure that will suffice, and you won't get bottlenecked by cpu, etc).
