Can someone suggest a good free program to use to remote access another machine not directly connected to mine....a friends house
with windows 7, do you need to turn on allow remote connections as well

UltraVNC, TightVNC or RealVNC, or if you have business or ultimate versions of Windows Vista/7 on both computers, you can use the built in Remote Desktop.
You may need to forward ports on the router and firewall software and you'll need the client's IP address.

Team Viewer is another option, far simpler than setting up VNC/RDP, port forwarding etc.
