Re: Torchwood
British TV children's drama isn't all bad. Sure, it's impossible to watch the recent incarnations of Dr Who without wretching at all the schmaltz or groaning at the glass-shittingly awful cookie-cutter stories. Granted, I only made it through two thirds of an episode of Torchwood before switching it off in disgust (the story was a staggeringly hamfisted mess about the ghost of a rape/murder victim - it made Lawl's attitude to Pinata look downright sensitive),.
..but we still occasionally get stuff like 'The Fades' (8/10).
Just finished watching the 4th episode and it's great. My mate's going to go spare if/when she finds out we've let her kids watch it because it's violent, gory, has sex scenes and quasi-religious overtones and they throw the F word around a lot - other than that, it's really wholesome family entertainment. The characters are likeable and well-developed, the story is interesting and well-paced. It builds genuine dramatic tension instead of just pulling a crisis out of it's arse at the 33-minute mark - and most of all, for the curtain-twitching homophobic that watching Dr Who makes me feel like I've become, it's not forcing this ridiculous bloody notion on kids that there's something wrong with being straight.
