Ragemapping.com has launched [Updated]

Post by Infernis »

Hi guys,

I asked Obsidian if it was ok to post this here. Luckily, this wasn't a problem so here it goes.

As some of you might know, I've tried to create a community site called leveldesign.nl. These two attempts did not work out. I figured I would wait untill Rage released to open a dedicated site to the new tech. You know what they say about the third try right?

Anyway, it's a forum site using the same template as I had for Leveldesign.nl. I opened a IRC channel on Quakenet as well. You can find us at #id-tech5.com. Last but not least, in order to really connect aspiring designers, I also made a Facebook page.

This post is meant for everybody else interested in the new tech. Come visit us at http://www.id-tech5.com. I can't wait to see what some of you will produce.

so, the next site will be id-tech6.com, then id-tech7.com? wow, that's pretty stupid. you should've thought twice before deciding on that name. people searching for id tech 5 are now going to get your shitty forum page, rather something more meaningful towards id tech 5.

why couldn't you have called your "thing" something else? an actual "name" for your site.

you are certainly not the official "id-tech5" website, so don't act like you are by naming all your shit with that name. so lame.

Lol well good luck on that! Crappy template, no taste whatsoever and only focuses on id Tech 5.

I wouldn't be surprised if he made an id-software.com.

Lots of love here. I'm glad I posted this.

Very constructive criticism. Especially the part about it focussing on one engine, since almost every site, including this one, does that. It just shows that I'm dealing with very intelligent and educated people.

Keep it coming.

Did I miss something? As I can tell there's no reason to freak out like that. He reserved quite a good URL for a forum that can't be filled with content yet because the games are not out. Where's the problem?

Its Q3W, you have to expect a certain level of... Cunt.

Anyway, honestly, I think it would have been best to just focus on "id tech" rather than 5. The main issue is that I really can't see id Tech 5 being modded that much at all. Just look at ET:QW, it had the most pathetic of user support even though it had a full SDK and was waaaay more simple than Rage.

Might be asking too much to be honest.

dequeer and PenisEnvy posting, were you guys expecting any different kind of response from them other than sour negativity? Apparently, opinionated non-contributing zeros with unloving mothers feel a need to piss on a domain name to over-compensate for their own lack of ability to choose a non-homo user name for their Quake3World account. Maybe you two should exchange phone numbers.

Well I do have penis envy, what'd you expect? I just don't like the fact that it focuses on id Tech 5 only, who the hell's going to use id Tech 5? Look at ET:QW.

Wow, we need to get some more brushes to seal up those leaks, because the void is breaking out when it should not!

Anyways I think the site is a good idea. id tech 5 may have made some things easier (like plant placement, etc.) but it`s still going to be a long hard walk for a lot of people so a resource for assisting people with a more advanced engine is definitely going to be helpful. I wish you good luck with it.

domain name

Post by deqer »

Hey bud, I'll give you a bit of advice because I do this stuff for a living.

Private message you because--as you may already know--domain names cannot just be blurted out, because someone would just steal it first and then hold it for ransom.

---

You want to get something like [domain removed], because [reason removed]

The traffic will simply flow in on it's own because of your domain name containing those keywords. You won't need to do any SEO, because people will already be searching "[keyword phrase removed]" --- that's the keyword phrase you want to target. This is called Keyword Research, and I've done some for you now.

Then eventually--once few years past by--everyone's got your site bookmarked; It won't matter anymore what the domain is. You can begin to cover more topics, in the same sense that quake3world covers multiple topics.

---

Your site will have the most credibility at that point because of it's long duration of existence. So, that means you should register this domain ASAP.

---

(read the end of this part for the "optional" statement.)

I would though--at a minimum, for SEO--ensure your pages have good META settings, including your TITLE. Make sure every page title has your site name in it though, and make sure it's at the end of your title. The end of your title is least relevant when viewed by search engines.

I'll help you out.

Examples:
[homepage]
Title = "[title removed] | [site name removed]"
Description = "[description removed]"
Keywords = "[keywords removed]"

[about us]
Title = "[title removed] | [site name removed]"
Description = "[description removed]"
Keywords = "[keywords removed]"

...

In the case that you are using phpBB--which you are--then I do not expect you to be able to change the meta/titling so easy. It's okay since the titles are unique, but the description and keywords are empty; if you can find a way to set those in phpBB, then I recommend you do so.

---

Good luck.

*** I've messaged you the removed parts.

Oh, and I would still keep your id-tech5.com domain, and have it redirect instead.

Yeah no reason to be hostile but, I do think that domain name isn't great because it sounds like an official idtech5 site which it is not. Like, Id Tech 5 World or Id Tech 5 Community or something makes more sense to me. But whatever :)

For the sake of clarity, I will elloborate on the name choice. I did not want to specify Rage or Doom because I wanted it to make sense for everyone interested in working with this specific technology. There was no intentional domain claiming or trying to sound official. Although I did encounter that myself because multiple variations of the name are already secured by shady characters. Perhaps a different name would have been better. Maybe that's something to think about in the future. Let's see where this goes first.

Regarding interest, nobody knows if modding for Rage and Doom will take off,but there is no harm in having a platform ready if it does.

If anything, having a central community will only promote modding, level designing or asset creation for the games using the engine.

I've gotten some really good feedback regarding the domain name and getting more traffic through search engines instead of relying solely on forums like these. Besides that, I also got some feedback regarding the forum layout. Since the tools haven't been released yet and only 13 accounts were made, I decided to make a change before the site grows any further.

I've registered http://www.ragemapping.com and made a new forum layout while still using the same template. The site http://www.id-tech5.com now immediately redirects to http://www.ragemapping.com. This will be temporary. Once all traffic goes directly to http://www.ragemapping.com, then http://www.id-tech5.com will be turned into a Wiki for the engine.

The only downside is for those of you who registered, you'll need to register again. The IRC channel and Facebook page will be replaced as well. I apologize for any inconvenience but I'm sure this is for the better.

Thank you!

i like the idea,
and maybe it helps to form a team
to make one or two rage-maps ...
coz the tech is much too demandin,
to work on ur own!

i dont care about the webSite-name.
but its good, that u split rage and doom now!
