Cooking classes. Every done one & if so what?
Cooking classes. Every done one & if so what?
My better half, trouble and strife (read Wife) got me a cooking class for Christmas gone.
Not that I needed it but it was and will always useful to pick up tit bits of information and hone my culinary skills.
Nice to learn some new tricks and restaurant shortcuts too.
It was Thai Cooking- Introduction (never done one) and today it was a most pleasant morning.
We got to eat what we prepared and t'was great.
We learned the basics and then prepared and cooked 5 or so courses in 4 hours (classroom) then shared about.
Pretty good value I thought given a return meal discount voucher and some wine.
Just wonder if you people here have ever been so inclined to do a cooking class of any origin/nationality, French/Indonesian/Greek, you know where I am coming from, or been to one (given as a gift)?
Thoughts?

Re: Cooking classes. Every done one & if so what?
I've never been given a cooking class but both my parents are chefs and have owned multiple restaurants which I've also worked in. I've done everything in a restaurant from cooking to waiting tables even bus boy at one point.
I know a lot of seafood recipes and I've learned some Thai recipes but never an actual course.

Never did any cooking classes. Did watch iron chef for a while for ideas. I guess learning techniques first hand is more important than getting recipes though. Would do it for that, specifically Mediterranean.
Supercook.com helps out with recipes anyway.

Yes recipes are OK I suppose but those little tricks & learning techniques first hand were the value.
The knife, well chopping blade handling was most impressive ....
Here it is, the big bugger at the bottom.

Funny it was a Kiwi brand but (of course) made in China
And the Teacher sharpened (honed to be correct) it on a mortar and pestle like this..

Re: Cooking classes. Every done one & if so what?
Neat, sounds like you had fun whiskey. I've never done a formal cooking class, but have spent time in the kitchen with my parents and friends that are good cooks. I would like to branch out a little though, so maybe getting me and the gf in a class wouldn't be a bad idea. Learning how to properly make a specialty food, like sushi for instance, would be really cool.
What were the courses you cooked? How did they turn out?
Thank you Survivor, I'll have to try out supercook.com
I've been using allrecipes.com
I just made these pork chops with this raspberry chipotle sauce for dinner tonight. I love it and more importantly, it's something with a little heat that the gf actually likes.
I have hawaiian chicken marinating in the fridge for tomorrow night (amazing).
Anyone else have favorite internet recipes? There's some good stuff out there.

Nah dude, I know a guy in real life, his last name is Simpson and he goes by HomerJ. If he was looking for me he'd probably stop here so I'm curious.

Re: Cooking classes. Every done one & if so what?

Oh, sorry Kracus, that's not me. I'm just a Simpson's fan.

Re: Cooking classes. Every done one & if so what?
Got a lot of drugz and gunz just sitting around.
Re: Cooking classes. Every done one & if so what?
Never been to a class, but I enjoy cooking quite a bit so I wouldn't be surprised to find myself in one sometime... cool trick, that, sharpening your knife on a mortar & pestle.
A local tool shop around here sells a mortar & pestle whereby the pestle is shaped to fit exactly inside the bowl, so you can just crush and grind your ingredients with ease, rather than chasing them around with the standard bat-shaped pestle. Works like a charm
Made out of solid marble too.
ps - mazda you're a fuckin' twit, aye?

no i have not taken any cooking classes
i have cooked for a very long time tho
i dont mess with any spices or liquids at all tho , just the main ingredients and salt and pepper
it means i have to concentrate on quality ingredients otherwise the taste will be bad.
i use coconut oil ey its soooo good
sometimes i put soya sause on rice as a treat!

Sounded like me so long agoHomerJ wrote: .............and am a frequent visitor of lvlworld for q3 maps (or at least was, when I played Q3). I did a lot of critiques on maps , seemingly years ago. Much fun and some were jaw dropingly awesome of course..
I must revisit lvlworld

Re: Cooking classes. Every done one & if so what?
My previous employer organized something like this for me and my colleagues from my department. We went to some sort of wizard chef's kitchen and he taught us all kinds of stuff. In the end we ate the dinner we had prepared and it was pretty fucking good

Heh the really funny thing is that at some point while I frequented this website I did have "drugz" and "gunz" sitting around so while you're jokingly implying that my lifestyle involves hoes and bitches, drugs and guns I've actually lived that life for real while you've been busy badly drawing nekkid ladies cause that's the closest you'll ever get to a nice piece.Captain Mazda wrote:Got a lot of drugz and gunz just sitting around.

Re: Cooking classes. Every done one & if so what?
I've always wanted to upgrade my knives... hollow edge meaning there are small indents on the blade to prevent blade-lock? One day I'll buy myself a nice set of knives... all the better to shank peeps with.plained wrote:wow Kracus really upsettled a portion of the community ey!

Re: Cooking classes. Every done one & if so what?
yes there are little drilled things on the edge
so like if you cut a big potatoe in half, instead of the half suction sticking on the knife, the holes let out the surface suction or whatever?
http://www.chefcentral.com/category/61/ ... nives.html
i got awesome awesome deals from ebay on separate knives. they were new too.
i would not buy a set tho, to many of the knives will be redundant and not be used.
